Christmas 2013 クリスマス 2013

On 12/13, there was Haiku School's Holiday Night. The young graders did a spectacular job dancing. They amused us and rejoiced us.

When I saw how sparkled and sincere the children's eyes were when they were talking to Santa Clause, it reminded me again that they're still very much in tact with that magical and beautiful world.

Oh, how precious they were. 

12月13日が教えている小学校のホリデーナイトでした。教え子たち（２年生）、とっても上手に踊れました。楽しく、幸せいっぱいな気持ちにさせてくれる踊りでした。

ふと見かけた、サンタさんと話しているときの子供たちの目の輝き具合と、真剣さに「あぁ、そうだった。この子たちは、まだまだあちらの摩訶不思議でこの上なく美しい世界と通じているんだな」と改めて思い、とても愛おしく思いました。

12/20 was the last day of school!!
I prepared a little gift for each student with a letter (just finished that morning). Oh, how I'll miss them, but I am ready for a break.

This year, magnets with their individual names printed were my gifts to them. The pink round one in the photo above is one of them. It's not chocolate. (I erased the name for privacy.)

12月20日が今学期最後の日でした！
子供達ひとりひとりに、ちょっとしたプレゼントと手紙を用意しました。何とかその日の朝に終らしました。彼ら、彼女たちにしばらく会えないのは寂しいけれど、でも冬休み、待っていました。（先生はここらで一息入れたい！）

今年は子どもたちの名前をプリントしたマグネットがプレゼント。上の写真の手前に見えているピンクの丸いやつ。チョコではありません。(名前はプライバシー保護のため消しました。)

A gift from my mom in America (she made this Santa from an oyster shell.) 

私にとって、アメリカでのお母さんであるアリス手作りの、オイスターの貝殻で作られたサンタさん。

Because I don't have a tree, I put some ornaments friends gave me on a koa tree next to my house.

ツリーはないので、色々な人から頂いたオーナメントを家の横に立っているコアの木にかけさせてもらいました。

I made this with my students. 

Each one of them made one. It took some hours (because they are still 2nd graders). 

Lots of math concepts were incorporated, such as parallel lines, symmetry, measurement, counting by 2s, and more.

Some tears were shed, but no one gave up!

Here is how.

これを生徒たちと作りました。

（一人一人が、一つの完成品を作りました。）

3時間くらいかかったかな。（まだ２年生なのでね。）

算数の勉強にもなりました。

平行線のこと。左右対称のこと。定規の使い方、2、4、6、 8、10と一つ飛ばしで数えることなどね。

中には泣きつつやる子もいましたけど、みんな諦めずにがんばりました。

When I used to teach at a preschool, one of the preschoolers painted this. 

We were selling them at the school fundraiser, and I bought this one myself. 

昔、ある幼稚園で教えていたときに、ある子が作ったもの。

それを学校のバザーで売ったときに、私が買った。

Thank you, Lisa! (a gift from my neighbor) What a great artistic sense. 

No wonder. She is an artist!

Making Apple Cobbler

On Christmas, my friend Kazuko invited me to her place.

Drinking a cup of hot chocolate by the fire place was dreamlike.

クリスマスには和子さんがおうちにご招待してくれました。

暖炉のそばで飲むココアは夢のようでした。

When I am with people with whom I love and feel comfortable, the space has this gentle energy. 

一緒にいて心地のいい人たちと一緒にいられる空間は、なんてやさしいんだろう。

Hair Cut 髪切り

There goes my hair! 

髪の毛さん、さようなら。 

I've donated my hair to Locks of Love twice in the past.

I thought I could not do it anymore after I started to dance Odissi because I need a long hair to make a bun.

But one day (maybe about a year ago), I had a notion!
"Oh, if I grow it long enough, I can still donate!"

I've waited, so that I would still have enough length to make a bun even after I cut the minimum requirement (10 inches).

I have never colored or permed my hair. I hope it becomes a part of a nice wig for children.

切る前（近所のリサに撮ってもらった）

過去に二回、病で髪の毛を失ってしまった子供たちのカツラを作るために寄付したことがありました。（その機関がLocks of Loveという。）

でもインド舞踊を踊り始めてからは、お団子を作れるだけの長さが必要なので、もう寄付できないなと思っていました。

でも、ある日（一年くらい前のこと）思いついたのです！
「それならその分伸ばせばいいのだ！」ということに。

それでずっと伸びるのを待っていました。やっと必要最小限の10インチ(25センチ)切ってもまだお団子が作れるようになったので、切りました。

一度も染めたことも、パーマをかけたこともありません。
すてきなカツラになればいいなと思います。

The First Half of December 12月前半

Someone I love from the bottom of my heart turned 4 years old.

I cannot believe that he is already 4!

心の底から愛する誰かさんが４歳になりました。

もう４歳なんて！

My friend Naoko gave me these earrings she made for my birthday.
She even researched what my birthday stone is (not just birthstone by month but by the specific date).

直ちゃんが、誕生日プレゼントに直ちゃん手作りのイヤリングをくれました。
私の誕生日の日の石を使って（月じゃなくて日にちの）。

Every Monday for 8 weeks, there was a children's Odissi class.
I was my teacher's assistant.
The children worked very hard during the 8 weeks,
and they performed for their parents at the last class.

８週間、毎週月曜日に、子供達のオディッシィダンスのクラスがありました。
私は私の先生のアシスタントでした。
子供達は８週間の間、一生懸命慣れない動きに付いて来てくれました。
最後のクラスでは保護者の前で短い踊りを披露しました。

My early Christmas gift arrived from my mom in Japan.
It was Kamaage Udon from Kagawa (Kagawa is known for Udon)!
Japanese food I miss the most and cannot get a real good quality here on Maui is Kamaage Udon that my mom makes.

クリスマスプレゼントが、日本の母から一足早く届きました。
そう、本場香川の釜揚げうどん！
日本の食べ物で何が一番恋しいかと聞かれれば、母の作る釜揚げうどん。

I like to eat it super hot (temperature wise) in a simple soup stock which has freshly ground ginger juice.
Let me tell you... when I was eating it, I was in heaven...
I received it on Monday and decided to eat it on Friday night.
All week, I kept encouraging myself by saying, "At the end of this week, Kamaage Udon is waiting for you!"
Yes, the slogan was "Kamaage Udon."

熱々のうちに、ただ出しと生姜の磨り下ろしと一緒に食べるのが好きです。
食べているときは・・・　まるで極楽にいるようでした。
届いたのが月曜日。金曜日の夜に食べようと決め、釜揚げうどんを楽しみに一週間をがんばった私。
そう、合い言葉は「釜揚げうどん」。

I made squash, kabocha, and carrot soup.

スクワッシュと南瓜とと人参のスープを作りました。

Oh year, there were onions, too.

玉ねぎも入れたんだった。

You cook (fry) only the onions first, and then put other veges and cook until they become tender.

玉ねぎだけ先に炒めて、あとの材料を入れてしばらくて煮て、味を整える。

You put them in blender.

ミキサーにかけてスープ状に。

I also put some ginger juice. It was a perfect soup for a winter day.

生姜のすり汁も入れて、冬にぴったりのスープでした。

One morning, I went to a cafe and ordered a cup of cappuccino and did my diary entry.
What an elegant morning...
(I had cappuccino twice in the year 2013.)

ある朝はカフェに行って、カプチーノを飲みながら
日記を書いたりなんていう優雅なことを。
（2013年にはカプチーノを二回飲みました。）

On 12/2, I did the end-of-a-year deep cleaning (it's called Osouji in Japanese tradition). My house was super clean then. I wondered if I had done it a bit too early. I might have to do it again at the end of December. Oh well, it would be an easy one. I guess I can focus on going through a pile of paperwork that has been sitting on a corner of my desk for awhile... 

12月2日に大掃除をした私。家、すごくきれいになりましたよ。でも早過ぎたかな。また今月の終わり頃にやらなくちゃいけないかな。まぁいいや。そうだとしても、きっと「大掃除」じゃなくて「小掃除」で済むでしょう。それに、机の隅にずっと置きっぱなしになっている色々な書類を片付けなくちゃいけないし。そっちに集中出来ると思って、良しとしよう。

One day, I thought that this was an interesting picture (sky).
Maybe I thought so because the outline of the trees and the cloud matched.

ある日に「面白い」と思った絵（空）
木々の輪郭と雲がマッチしていたからかな。

（教え子たちからのメッセージ。自分で訳すのは照れくさいけど、載せるからには訳さなくてはと思い。「あかり先生は世界で一番の先生だ。」とか「あかり先生はこの地球上でベストな先生だ。」って書いてくれている。大袈裟だなぁ。「よい感謝祭の日を」とかも。あぁ、そんなこと書いてくれても宿題の量は減りませんよ（そもそも、そんなに出してないけど）。なんてね（笑）。

I went to the Makawao Hongwanji's garage sale.

They hold it twice a year, but this time was my first time.

マカワオ本願寺のガレージセールに行ってみた。

一年に二回あるのだけど、行ってみたのは今回が初めて。

Oh, I found an Obutsudan.
おぉ、お仏壇だ。

That day, after I explored the garage sale (I didn't find anything to buy there), I went to the Haleakala Waldorf School's Holiday Fair.

その日は、そのガレージセールを見た後（何も買おうと思うものは見つからなかったのですが）、ハレアカラウォルドフスクールのホリデー・フェアに行ってきました。

I watched the school's students perform and visited almost each booth.

この学校に通う子供達のパフォーマンスを見たり、出店しているお店を見て回ったりしました。

Yummy bakery was sold, too.

おいしいパンたちも売られていました。

After some time, I took a break by having a piece of pastry and lemonade with a shot of ginger juice!

歩き回って疲れたので、レモネード（ショウガ汁がたっぷり入っていた）とパンで一休み。

Then I bumped into my friends!
(Naoko and Talasi. I didn't know the gentleman. Naoko knew.)

それから馴染みのある顔にも会えました。
（直ちゃんとタラちゃん。白ひげのおじさまは私は知らない。直ちゃんの知り合い。）
