During the winter break, my classroom will be deep cleaned (this

happens once a year), so all the furniture were moved to one side.

To celebrate the winter solstice, I went to the top of the world (on Maui) with my friend. 

冬至を祝って、（マウイの）世界のてっぺんに友だちと行ってきました。

The first day of winter break was spent by bringing my car to a dealer shop for the semiannual check up at 7 am, by going to a dental appointment at 9 am, and by seeing a doctor for a follow-up at 2 pm.

I didn't mean to schedule them in one same day, but they naturally happened. It's so hard to get to these things while school is in session. Oh, a visit to Office Max (to buy a new pencil sharpener for my classroom) and to a post office (I finally mailed out my hair), and to a bank (to deposit a check which is a good thing!) were added in between those appointments.

Phew. I took a nice break between some of them, so that I wouldn't exhaust myself. At the end of the day, I practiced (Odissi dance). It's the treat I was looking forward to all day. 

冬休みの第一日目は、朝７時にディーラーショップに車を持っていって、半年に一度している点検をしてもらって（オイルチェンジもして、タイヤのプレッシャーとかもチェックしてもらって）、９時に歯医者さんに行って、14時にはもう一つお医者さんとの予約（3ヶ月前に診てもらった症状の経過を診てもらうため）。

全て同じ日にするつもりは無かったのですが、たまたまそうなりました。学校がある間はそれらのことをするのが難しいのでね。その間に文房具屋さんに行って教室用の鉛筆削りを買ったり、郵便局に行ったり（やっとあの切った髪の毛を送れた）、銀行行ったり（小切手を振り込んだ。イエイ！）しました。

あいだ、あいだに適度な休憩時間も入れて疲れてしまわないようにしましたよ。それから自己練習（オディッシィダンスの）してきました。それを一日中楽しみにしていましたから。

Went to a gym class at 6 am. Surfed at Hookipa from 7 to 7:45 am. Went back to the gym to take another class (Power Plate) at 8. Can you tell how stoked I am?? Some kind of chemical (I don't know what) created from the morning exercise is rushing through my body. Winter break, here I come!! Now, I'm going to take a morning nap and will get on a translation job that is due soon. 

冬休み二日目は早く起きて、6時から7時までのジムクラスへ。7時15分から7時45分までジムからすぐ近くの海でちょこっとサーフィン。また8時にジムに戻って別のクラス（30分のパワープレート）を取ってきました。あぁ、すっごくハッピーなの分かります？朝のエクササイズによって抽出された喜びが体中を駆け回っています。冬休みよ、待っていました！これからちょっと朝寝します。起きたら締め切り間近の翻訳の仕事やります。

That afternoon, I had the 4th computer lesson with a lady who cannot see. Her perseverance and determination are admirable. In order for her to use the Contacts on MacBook, she needs to know how the Contacts' layout is set up. I didn't know how to explain that to her (words have their limit), so I made this texturized (bumped) sheet, so that she can feel and "see" in her mind (the pictures of the butterfly didn't have a meaning, but it looks pretty for us who can see; I just used available sheets of papers). 

When you're using the VoiceOver feature, you don't use a mouse, and the computer lets you move in a certain way. You have to know this layout in order to understand how to navigate yourself.

I would like to thank her for teaching me many lessons, such as not taking what we have for granted and sticking to what you put your mind on no matter how hard it is. All of these may sound like cliche, but when I'm with her, they have a whole different level of meaning.

同じ日の午後には、ある目の見えない方との4回目のコンピューターレッスンがありました。彼女の忍耐と揺るぎない決意の力は尊敬に値します。マックコンピューターで、コンタクト（アドレス帳）を使う場合、コンタクトのレイアウトを知っておかなくてはいけません。それがどのようにレイアウトされているのかを、言葉で伝えるのは難しかったので、このように即席で少し立体になったシートをそのあたりにあった紙と毛糸で作りました。それを触ってもらって、構図を頭の中で見てもらうようにしました。（蝶蝶に意味はないのですが、目の見える私たちから見たらかわいいですね。）

ボイスオーバー（目の見えない方のための機能）を使っている時、マウスは使いません。なのでコンピューターはある一定の動きをします。このレイアウトが頭に入っていないと、どこにどうやって動いたらいいのか分からないのです。私は彼女に感謝します。沢山のことを教えてもらっているからです。例えば、今自分が持っているもの（物に限らず、手足や目が見えるということ）を当たり前ではないこと。そして一度決めたらどんなに大変でも諦めないということ。これらのことは聞き溢れた言葉かもしれません。でも彼女と一緒にいると、それらに現実的な深みが加わるのです。

One of wonderful gifts I received on Christmas day is a couple of spines of Wana (sea urchin) from surfing (my first time ever in my 12 years of Maui life). Luckily someone at the beach had vinegar, so I soaked my foot in it for 20 min or so, and the spines got noticeably smaller. Wow, vinegar!

I didn't mind the pain at all, but the first thing came to my mind was, "Oh, shoot! Can I dance?" Today (the following day of the incident), I danced. It hurt a bit, but it was doable, so I think I'm good to go. Phew. Well, it was a good reminder that the nature is out there, and chances are that we are hurting it more than it is hurting us. (Sorry to the wana who got stepped on by me.)

クリスマスに頂いたプレゼントの一つが、ヴァナ（うに）のとげでした。サーフィンしてて。マウイに12年暮らしていて初めてのこと。ラッキーなことに、たまたまお酢を持っている方がビーチにいたので分けてもらって、足を20分ほどつけていました。それだけでも大分小さくなりました。お酢すごいな！

痛み自体は全然構わなかったのだけど、一番心配だったのが「しまった！踊れるのだろうか？」ということ。でも今日（その翌日のこと）踊ってみたら、ちょっと痛かったけど踊れたのでほっと一安心。自然は確実にそこにあって、自然が私たちを痛めるよりも、きっと私たちの方が自然を傷み付けているのだろうなと思い出させてくれる良いレッスンでした。（踏んでしまったうにさん、ごめんなさいね。）

Someone else at the beach told me to make paste out of MSG and bitter and put it on the affected area. Apparently, it dissolves the calcium that composes wana.

あと、ビーチにいた人が「化学調味料とビターズというお酒（カクテルに入れるもの）を混ぜてペースト状にして患部に塗ったらいい」と教えてくれたので、やってみました。うにを構造しているカルシウムをとかす効果があるらしいです。

Christmas 2013 クリスマス 2013

On 12/13, there was Haiku School's Holiday Night. The young graders did a spectacular job dancing. They amused us and rejoiced us.

When I saw how sparkled and sincere the children's eyes were when they were talking to Santa Clause, it reminded me again that they're still very much in tact with that magical and beautiful world.

Oh, how precious they were. 

12月13日が教えている小学校のホリデーナイトでした。教え子たち（２年生）、とっても上手に踊れました。楽しく、幸せいっぱいな気持ちにさせてくれる踊りでした。

ふと見かけた、サンタさんと話しているときの子供たちの目の輝き具合と、真剣さに「あぁ、そうだった。この子たちは、まだまだあちらの摩訶不思議でこの上なく美しい世界と通じているんだな」と改めて思い、とても愛おしく思いました。

12/20 was the last day of school!!
I prepared a little gift for each student with a letter (just finished that morning). Oh, how I'll miss them, but I am ready for a break.

This year, magnets with their individual names printed were my gifts to them. The pink round one in the photo above is one of them. It's not chocolate. (I erased the name for privacy.)

12月20日が今学期最後の日でした！
子供達ひとりひとりに、ちょっとしたプレゼントと手紙を用意しました。何とかその日の朝に終らしました。彼ら、彼女たちにしばらく会えないのは寂しいけれど、でも冬休み、待っていました。（先生はここらで一息入れたい！）

今年は子どもたちの名前をプリントしたマグネットがプレゼント。上の写真の手前に見えているピンクの丸いやつ。チョコではありません。(名前はプライバシー保護のため消しました。)

Because I don't have a tree, I put some ornaments friends gave me on a koa tree next to my house.

I made this with my students. 

Each one of them made one. It took some hours (because they are still 2nd graders). 

Lots of math concepts were incorporated, such as parallel lines, symmetry, measurement, counting by 2s, and more.

Some tears were shed, but no one gave up!

Here is how.

これを生徒たちと作りました。

3時間くらいかかったかな。（まだ２年生なのでね。）

算数の勉強にもなりました。

平行線のこと。左右対称のこと。定規の使い方、2、4、6、 8、10と一つ飛ばしで数えることなどね。

中には泣きつつやる子もいましたけど、みんな諦めずにがんばりました。

When I used to teach at a preschool, one of the preschoolers painted this. 

We were selling them at the school fundraiser, and I bought this one myself.

I made a fried egg for the first time in a long time.
The edge of the white part didn't turn brown, so I was amazed.

久しぶりに目玉焼きを作ったら、白身の部分の縁（ふち）が茶色にならなずに白いままだったので、感動した。

The students were amazed by the date on 11/12/13 because it was 11, 12, 13.

子どもたちは11月12日2013年に感心したらしい。11、12、13と続くから。

In my class, I teach them ASL (American Sign Language).
They have more than 100 vocabulary.
Indeed, their memorization skill is marvelous.

私の教室では、手話（アメリカ英語バージョン）も教えています。
みんな、100個以上の語彙を手話で表せます。
子供たちの記憶力はいつも言っていますが、素晴らしいものです。

I swear my desk was clean in the morning.

I organize, clean up, and then the same repeats the next day. 

朝一番にはこのデスクきれいだったのですよ。

When I watched my dance teacher's kids, the older girl made this wonderful bracelet for me.

踊りの先生の子供たちの子守りをしていたときに、上のお姉ちゃんが、こんなすてきなブレスレットを作ってくれました。

I noticed that each person was wearing red shirt!

I love washing dishes, and I also love stacking them up in a dishpan while thinking the best way to let them dry. 

It's like a 3-dimensional puzzle.

皿洗いは大好きなのだけど、どれだけ乾き易いように積み重ねるか考えるのも楽しい。

Sometimes, my snack is frozen strawberries (I buy them frozen ones for smoothie).

時々、冷凍してある苺がおやつです。

（スムージー用に冷凍の苺を買ってあるのでね。）

My shower room doesn't have a ventilating fan, so whenever I take a shower, the room gets foggy, and I was concerned about possible mold growing. One day, I remembered that I had this cute fan, so I thought maybe I can hang it up. First, I put it upside down and hang it on a hanger, but it was a little too low to face the screen window.

私の家のシャワールームには換気扇が付いていません。なので熱いシャワーを浴びる度に、ルームが蒸気でムシムシになってしまいます。このままでは壁とかに黴が生えてしまうのでは・・・と思っていました。そこで「あっそうだ、私この小さな扇風機を持っていたんだ」と思い出して、吊るしてみようと思いました。まずは逆さまにしてハンガーにかけてみたのですけど、ちょっと窓の高さに届きません。

So, I hand it directly from the pole, and the heigh was just right! Because of this, the room does not get full of steam. I was amazed!

なので、突っ張り棒にじかにつり下げてみました。そしたら丁度高さがぴったり。このおかげで、もう蒸気でムシムシすることなくなりました。感動でした。

My neighbor invited me to watch a beautiful sunset one evening. I appreciated the invitation. When I got to where she was, I thought she was a tree fairy for a second, surrounded by the lichen.

近所の友だちが、有り難いことに「夕焼けがきれいだよ、見においで」と誘ってくれました。彼女がいたところに行ったら、彼女が木の妖精のように見えました。丸いこけに囲まれて。
