The Relationship between Haiku and Photography

Taken at 8:53 pm on Dec 6th, 2003

I'm amazed at a feature of digital cameras - showing every photo's very date and time when it was taken.

I came to Maui right after finishing high school.

"Buy a digital camera" was on my to do list before I left Japan. I wanted to send as many photos as I could to my parents. I felt bad for going so far away from them. I thought that sending them photos would be a way to stay in touch with them as well as to show how much I care about them. It was about when digital cameras became popular. I bought a laptop computer and a digital camera with money I earned from a part-time job I had during my high school years. (FYI: the camera was Canon's IXY Digital 200, and I loved it!)

I went to an electric appliance store, which was in the neighborhood of where I used to live in Kochi. It was the very first time I negotiated a price on my own. I vividly remember the moment. I mustered up my courage from every corner of myself and said, "Would you please lower the price a bit? I came with money I earned doing a part-time job. I'm going to study abroad, and I'd like to send photos to my parents." When the price was lowered than the tag, I was really thrilled. I thought, "Wow, it doesn't hurt to give anything a try." I also thought, "The saying - 'asking is only a moment's shame' - is really true."

Looking back the moment, I think that the challenge I imposed upon myself was my way of preparing for the journey ahead. I said to myself, "If you cannot do this with your native language in your hometown, how are you going to survive and thrive on Maui where you don't know the language and anything?"

So with the laptop computer and the digital camera, I sent many photos to my parents, but I started to think, "I wish there was some sort of a platform where I can share my photos and my thoughts all at once without sending any email, and whoever want to see and read can come whenever they want..." I researched and found out that there was such thing, and it was called blog. That's how I started to write a blog in 2006. It startles me to think that it's been already 8 years.

I was just browsing through some photos I took with my first digital camera. When I saw the date and the time when the above photo of a pink plumeria was taken, it brought me back memories of that time. I was a full-time college student. I was studying from early morning to late night everyday. I think the book underneath the flower is a textbook. When I took the photo, I was thinking that the petals looked like ceramics, and I was caught by its beauty. I probably took this photo in between my assignments (it can be called procrastination :))

I think it was around that time when I started to notice that I actually like photography.

I think for me, taking photos and making haiku poems are very similar.

Today, I'd like to share the haiku poems I made this year.
However, I'm sorry. I cannot translate them to English at this point (no time), and quite honestly, with my translation skill, I don't know if I can really extract the subtle nuance of Japanese into English while following the 5, 7, 5 rule.
I will attempt someday.
Sorry, not today.

This year, I could not attend as many Haiku gatherings as I could last year. However, by creating some whenever I could, I was able to go inside the world of nature and inside of myself, and depicting the sceneries of those worlds with words was so much fun.

(Here and here are blog entires about my passion for haiku poems written in English. )

What Flowers Have Taught Me

These flowers are blooming around my house.
When flowers are open, the air around them seem brighter.

There are many things I learn from flowers.

Like about being with people's pain...

One day, I found a fairly long line scratched with something pointy along the side of my car. I guess my car got keyed. But it could be an accident. Someone who was carrying something heavy right by my car may not have realized that a part of his or her cloth was scratching my car. But if it was an intentional act, I felt sad, not for me but for the person who did it and for my car that embraced the pain.

I found myself tracing the line with my finger and felt as if I was tracing the person's scar in him or her. I prayed that he or she who could not help to do it found peace now.

Flowers have taught me that bravely and gracefulness can coexist.

Flowers have taught me the beauty of not making excuses.
Just be and accept one's fate.
They do not complain where their seeds have been placed.
They do their best to blossom as beautifully as they can regardless of their environment.

Making excuses for why I’m too tired to practice is easy, but actually getting myself to the studio has been challenging with a full-time (and I’d say demanding) job and other part-time jobs.

My heart yearns to dance, but my body says, “Oh boy, I am exhausted.”

I conciliate, intercede, and inspire myself and reach the studio.

Once I step into the studio, the exhaustion I was feeling disappears, and then I wouldn’t want to leave for a while. It’s a mystery.

Anyhow, I try to get to the studio as often as I can - even for 15 minutes while hoping that it would cultivate something in me - so that when I dance, I can access “the space” more smoothly and bring out the essence and share with the world around me.

Whatever happens, we will be fine as long as we are facing the sun.

Flowers remind me that we might be alone, but we are not alone by ourselves. We are alone together, so we are together ultimately. If we think this way, the loneliness itself becomes something endearing.

Random Photos of November 11

I saw this full moon before the sunrise, when I went out to put trash out.
I said, "Thank you for completing your night job."
It was about to glide to watch over the sleeping people on the other side of the planet.
The batons were passed to and from the sun.

There, the sun was rising.

I made a fried egg for the first time in a long time.
The edge of the white part didn't turn brown, so I was amazed.

The students were amazed by the date on 11/12/13 because it was 11, 12, 13.

In my class, I teach them ASL (American Sign Language).
They have more than 100 vocabulary.
Indeed, their memorization skill is marvelous.

I swear my desk was clean in the morning.
At the end of a day, it often looks like this...
I organize, clean up, and then the same repeats the next day.

When I watched my dance teacher's kids, the older girl made this wonderful bracelet for me.

The younger boy (4 years old) made this collage.
He chose these photos from various magazines.
I noticed that each person was wearing red shirt!

I like this corner because it makes me relaxed.
Everything was given to me.

I love washing dishes, and I also love stacking them up in a dishpan while thinking the best way to let them dry.
It's like a 3-dimensional puzzle.

Sometimes, my snack is frozen strawberries (I buy them frozen ones for smoothie).

My shower room doesn't have a ventilating fan, so whenever I take a shower, the room gets foggy, and I was concerned about possible mold growing. One day, I remembered that I had this cute fan, so I thought maybe I can hang it up. First, I put it upside down and hang it on a hanger, but it was a little too low to face the screen window.

So, I hand it directly from the pole, and the heigh was just right! Because of this, the room does not get full of steam. I was amazed!

My neighbor invited me to watch a beautiful sunset one evening. I appreciated the invitation. When I got to where she was, I thought she was a tree fairy for a second, surrounded by the lichen.

You're Not Alone

I had a dream the other day, a vivid and detailed yet ethereal one.
It was kind of a dream that lingered and echoed in me for some days.
Whenever I recalled it, it immediately surrounded me in an invisible, insurmountable bubble.
I get such dreams very rarely.
I felt so cozy and eternally safe.

Someone so dear to me but has already passed away was in the dream.
Her body was 40% solid and 60% transparent.
I knew that she was already dead but was visiting the earth for a limited time.

She was lying down on a futon bed.
She said, "Come here, Akari."
I silently neared her on my knees.
My long black hair was down, just washed.
She reached to my forehead with a glass-like arm yet determined arm.
She slowly and gently stroked my hair over and over.

Then she deliberately said, "I'm sorry, Akari that I'm dead.
I've not been able to be there for you when you were going through the very tough time."

Her unexpected words melted a large corner of iceberg in my heart and caused a dam to collapse.
I could not hold it back anymore.
I wept without any sound from my vocal chords.
Hot pearls of tears kept rolling onto my cheeks.
As they dropped, they got soaked in the ulterior scars as if they had been waiting for this "rain" all this time. Then I realized, "Ah, I had been wanting to cry."
She kept stroking my hair without a word.

Then I woke up.

Then I sobbed.

My hands covered my face, and I cried while I sat up in my bed.
I felt something in my soul, something so warm, something so tender, something so liberating, something so evocative, but most importantly of all, something in my soul.

Appreciation and love for all living things and love from her filled my heart as the morning sun slowly rose and filled the room with newly born light.

I knew that I wasn't alone.
I just didn't know, but she, and many other souls have been there for me all this time, watching over me, and they continuously will be.

I am not alone,
and you are not alone, either.

The color of the morning light was so gentle.

Nowhere Close

There have been feelings I've been feeling and that I've been wanting to digest and sublimate if possible.

But I am nowhere close.

As soon as I get a glimpse of it, it runs through my fingers like desert sands.

As soon as I taste the slightest flavor of it, it evaporates on tip of my tongue like desert water.

I sit and wait.

I close my eyes and clothes my cries.

It will come.

Time will ripe.

A baby will come out one way or the other.

It's just not the time yet.

When I'm in this space, the world around me seems to speak for me.

Maybe it is because the particles of the feelings I am feeling are reflected in the air around me.

So I photograph, attempting to capture its light.

So I dance, attempting to extract its essence.

But I am nowhere close.

But I am nowhere close to abandon this attempt because this is what keeps me alive.

Ireinohi

June 23rd was Ireinohi; the day the Battle of Okinawa ended on June 23rd, 1945.
Okinawans have set this date aside to remember and pray together for their family members and relatives who died during the battle.

Very recently, here on Maui, I met a Japanese lady who was an orphan of the battle. She didn't have any relative to rely on so moved to Maui as a young lady and got married here. She is in her 80's now. Meeting someone like her and listening to her stories reminded me that the war was real and not too long ago.

The U.S. arm force landed Okinawa on April 1st, 1945. For 84 days, Japan and the US battled face to face while involving innocent residents of Okinawa. It was the only land battle within Japan. It was merciless (as every war is). I try to stretch my mind to imagine what those 84 days were like... It was very likely beyond my imagination.

Still today, on this beautiful blue planet earth, we are not in lack of injustice and violence... However, all of these sad facts 'have not yet caused me to suffer the miscarriage of hope in human potential.' (I got this expression from Pat Conroy's "The Water id Wide.")

When can we fully give birth to a beautiful world? We got let love flow from within and toward one another. I believe that's what the souls who shed tears, blood and cries during those 84 days are hoping for us to do.

There is Beauty Even at the End of Life

I made these for a potluck party ('cause it's so easy!)

Nature is indeed, always beautiful.

No make-up (though I only wear make-up when I perform).
No anything. Just me with my acne scared face and my small friend.
I love it.

Nausicaa was and still is my heroin I've admired since I was a little girl. I always wanted to be like her - loving and courageous at the same time. I think my love for insects partially come from her.

There is beauty even at the end of life.
Well, I actually believe that there is this special glow that all living things emanate at two distinctive times in a life - the birth and death.

This is vegetarian sushi created by Succie. I met him and his wife Kaori in Seattle, WA a couple of years ago, and they were visiting Maui. Doesn't this look like a piece of art? Doesn't this look so delicious? Don't you want to eat it? He made it with whatever he could get here on Maui. They are hoping and planning to move to Maui. I am hoping that their dream would come true in the near future for them and for me to eat this again!

Look at this detailed work!

Speaking of eating, this tree that stands in my neighborhood always makes me wonder if a giant man had a bite of it.

Speaking of nature, "Want Chickens?" This is a school newsletter of a school where I teach.
"If you want chickens, please feel free to come on by and catch them!"

I love it. Is this only in Hawaii? But if you come during the school hours, please sign in at the office first. You can say, "I'm a chicken wrangler."

Some older kids are actually good at catching them. I feel good to be teaching at a place where kids know how to garden, catch chickens (not everyone, though), fish, and climb palm trees to get coconuts.

January and February were busy months for dance lovers on Maui. There were three well-known dance companies came to Maui Arts & Cultural Center to perform.
On January 17th, I watched Keigwin + Company.

On February 7th, I watched Giordano Dance Chicago. They celebrated their 50th year.

School Started

In Japan, we have this tradition of eating "Ozoni" on New Year's day.
In my family, my father is the one who makes it. It's not that my mom doesn't know how to cook it; she is the full-time meal preparer all year around, but on New Year's Day, it is dad's job/pleasure. He makes a really good one - tastes warm, simple yet vast just like him. As we begin a new year, his Ozoni assures me that I would be all right no matter what happens in this year.

Come to think of it, I think I always enjoyed observing the differences between the process as well as the end products of my parents' work. For instance, both of my parents braided my hair when I was small. They had their own way of doing, and the braid looked different when it was done. Even my friends could tell the difference. One would say, "Akari, your dad braided your hair today, didn't he?" I liked both styles.

Because I could not go back to Japan for this year's New Year's Day, my parents sent me a package of kiri mochi (cut rice cake), so that I can have Ozoni even on Maui. I actually hadn't cooked it by myself until this year just because my dad always made it for me. I enjoyed cooking something new and appreciated being able to have the same custom even in a foreign country.

Also, right before the New Year's Day, my Japanese friend on Maui gave me mochi. I did not know, but the temples and shrines on Maui pound mochi every year which makes total sense for there have been so many Japanese immigrants for the sugar cane plantation. Now, my parents won't have to send me all the way from Japan.

School resumed on January 3rd.
On the 2nd, I was preparing for the next day, but I was thinking in my mind, "It's still the 2nd day of a new year!"  I still can't get used to this even after having lived here for the past 11 years. In Japan, New Year's Day is the biggest holiday, so everything is closed at least for the first 3 days or even 5 days, but they don't close around Christmas there, so I guess that's the cultural difference.

I missed my students, so I was excited to see them, but I hadn't missed the amount of work that was about to engulf me... Well, I guess it means that I could really relax during the break.

The photo above is steamed purple sweet potato - one of my favorite food. I sprinkled kinako (roasted soy bean flour). This is one of my favorite snacks.

One day, when I was preparing lunch, I saw these lights on the ceiling of my living room. I thought that they were beautiful and looked at them for a while.
