I Decided to Climb Up

I decided to climb a ladder.

When I babysat my dance teacher's kids last time, we drew freely.
I had not idea what I was going to draw, and it was fun that way.
No theme, no rule, just draw.

I walked and walked.

Oops! I almost fell. But I was okay.

I can jump over a big hole.

I can even hang upside down!

There must be some views that can be only seen when you climb up there.

My new year's diary book has arrived.
(I order it from here every year.)
I was stoked!

Some children have this as a daily view on the way to and from school.
How great is that?

May they grow up to be big hearted people like the ocean.

Random Photos of November 11

I saw this full moon before the sunrise, when I went out to put trash out.
I said, "Thank you for completing your night job."
It was about to glide to watch over the sleeping people on the other side of the planet.
The batons were passed to and from the sun.

There, the sun was rising.

I made a fried egg for the first time in a long time.
The edge of the white part didn't turn brown, so I was amazed.

The students were amazed by the date on 11/12/13 because it was 11, 12, 13.

In my class, I teach them ASL (American Sign Language).
They have more than 100 vocabulary.
Indeed, their memorization skill is marvelous.

I swear my desk was clean in the morning.
At the end of a day, it often looks like this...
I organize, clean up, and then the same repeats the next day.

When I watched my dance teacher's kids, the older girl made this wonderful bracelet for me.

The younger boy (4 years old) made this collage.
He chose these photos from various magazines.
I noticed that each person was wearing red shirt!

I like this corner because it makes me relaxed.
Everything was given to me.

The sky

I love washing dishes, and I also love stacking them up in a dishpan while thinking the best way to let them dry.
It's like a 3-dimensional puzzle.

Sometimes, my snack is frozen strawberries (I buy them frozen ones for smoothie).

My shower room doesn't have a ventilating fan, so whenever I take a shower, the room gets foggy, and I was concerned about possible mold growing. One day, I remembered that I had this cute fan, so I thought maybe I can hang it up. First, I put it upside down and hang it on a hanger, but it was a little too low to face the screen window.

So, I hand it directly from the pole, and the heigh was just right! Because of this, the room does not get full of steam. I was amazed!

My neighbor invited me to watch a beautiful sunset one evening. I appreciated the invitation. When I got to where she was, I thought she was a tree fairy for a second, surrounded by the lichen.

Birthday Related Photos

A beautiful cake I bought for my friend Mika who also had birthday in October AND myself (!)

The name of the cake was "Chocolate Harvest Torte" with brandied apricots and ground almonds.
$24 at the farmers market (gluten free)

One gathering I hosted at my place with all Japanese speaking friends.
We chatted, ate, drank, laughed, and did a "radio exercise" which every Japanese person would know until 2 am!!
It was so much fun.

Mika made this thin pancake like bread with asazumi (charcoaled hemp) powder. We put different kinds of vege dishes on top of it and rolled it up and ate. It was so yummy.

I received this cute birthday card from my family in Japan.
Inside, there was a message from my brother, dad, and mom.
Each one had an interesting message, reflecting their personality.
I loved them all.
I felt the distance between us added more power to their love permeating through me with a bit of homesickness and lots of happiness.

Speaking of cards, I also received this funny birthday card from my hanai mom, Alice who now lives in the mainland USA. The front cover says, "The Silent Monks of the Carthusian Monastery would like to wish you a happy birthday..."

When I read the cover, I expected what was coming.

I knew it! Blank!
I felt like I heard their silent blessings...
I laughed and laughed.
Poor monks, they must have had no idea that their pictures would end up being a cover page of a birthday card (if this photo was genuinely taken a long time ago).

Of course, there was a nice, heartfelt message on the back of this card.

If you've seen the previous blog entry, you would know what this is. One of my students drew this at home after the art lesson and gave it to me on my birthday. Thank you.

On birthday, I happened to come across with this magazine by a register at a grocery store. I don't buy magazines in the US at all, so it was rare that I bought one. It grabbed my attention as someone who loves photography.

On my birthday evening, my dance teacher Sarala and her husband Robert invited me over for dinner. I had a very delicious dish with them and their two adorable kids. I even had a piece of apple pie as desert.

The Apples of My Eyes

I have a non-blood-related niece and a nephew.
They are my dance teacher's kids: Y and S.
I've known them since Y was 9 months old.
Now Y is 9 years old, and S is 3 (almost 4) years old.
I was already living in the same house a month prior to S was born, so S probably thought I came with the house.
I watch them once a week.
I've fed them, bathed them, slept with them, changed diapers, disciplined them, picked them up from schools, and laughed with them.
They call me Nana. S called me so before he could speak, so I became Nana to them. Whenever they see me, they call, "Nana~~!!" and run to me. I don't know how many times my heart was melted by their embrace.
They are truly the apples of my eyes.
I am lucky to have such sweet beings in my life and seeing them grow up closely.

One day in July, we went to the Pukalani Pool which is ran by County of Maui (free admission).

Y can swim by herself.
S is still afraid of putting his face in the water, but he loves being in water.

On the away home from pool.

One day during the summer break, Y went to a summer camp, so S and I had a date to the upcountry.

We played at the Rice Park in Kula.

I had a great morning with my dear S.

At another time, Y's friend joined us.
We went to the Pukalani Pool again and played at this play ground on the way home.
When I saw this, I thought, "Wow, S, when did you become so long?"

Our feet :)
(Kids in Hawaii wear flip-flops. They tend to not wanting to wear a pair of shoes.)

Y and S have this cool toy called Magna-Tiles.
I even like to play with Magna-Tiles.
(Children can learn different shapes and other mathematical concepts.)

When I am with them, I can remember what it was like to be a child.

S let me borrow this cool looking car.
I wish I could ride it.

This was a full moon we (three of us) saw one evening.
It looked like a whole note on a music sheet.

I took them to the Makawao Hongwanji's Bon Dance Festival.

I thought that this bush being cut in an angle was cute.

Another picture of us in a shadow.
Someday, they will be bigger than me.
Even then, I hope that we get to hang out like we do now.
Nana will always hold your hands with love.
