Everything Will be All Right. Be Happy.

Everyone gathered around the table. There were always laughter.

The day to leave India has come at last.
The flight was a 8 pm departure flight, so I started to do the final packing that morning.

I had the very last dance lesson with Jhelumtai that morning. I learned the last part of Manikya Veena and Megh Pallavi. The cold I caught the previous day was still lingering over me. I honestly did not feel good, but I did not want to miss the last class with her and wanted to finish the very last part of the dance pieces I was learning, so I pushed myself and went.

At the school, I greeted each person with whom I have interacted. Although I did not get to talk much (because a half of them did not speak English), I saw them daily. Some of them were securities. After the first couple of days, as soon as I got to school, they grabbed a key and opened whichever classroom that was available for me to practice. There was a custodian who got me a cup of chai tea, too. Some of them were school secretaries, so I interacted with them when I paid the tuition. Some were school teachers, so I watched them with curiosity how they teach (since I am also a school teacher). When I told them, "Today is my last day in India. Thank you very much for all you have done for me," they asked, "So when are you coming back again?" I smiled and said, "Soon."

After the last dance lesson, I touched Jhelum-tai's feet (in India, people touch teachers' feet to show respect and appreciation for knowledge given), and at that time, something hot ran up the throat and nostril. All the teachings she's shared and given me so openly with passion and dedication were truly blessings that I could not thank enough. Also, when I touched her feet, I had a realization that my dream has truly come true. "Wow, I'm really here now. Wow, I've come and danced!" is what I thought. During the hard time I endured last year, I kept telling myself, "You'll go to India. You'll dance there." It was the mantra that kept me going (as if India was the carrot for a horse to keep running). Jhelumtai gently blessed my head and then hugged me.

When I thought that it was my last chance to see for awhile, the daily view I saw between the school and Mavshi's home became something special. When I said, "Thank you" to the ricksha driver in their language, he gave me a wrinkled, shining smile. I thought to myself, "Wow. What a bright smile. How do people here make such bright ones?"

When I got home, before I packed everything up, I wanted to take a shower first (I was covered in sweat). But as soon as I got home, the roommates told me, "There is no water." I said, "What happened?" They said, "There is some construction going on nearby, so they stopped for awhile." I said, "When do you think it will be reopened?" They said, "Maybe in 6 or 7 hours." They seemed to be used to it. I did not mind either if I did not have to get on an airplane that evening, but I wanted to be refreshed if I could. I thought to call Aparna who lives pretty close by, but not in the immediate neighborhood. Luckily her house had water, and more luckily, she happened to be nearby, so she offered to pick me up. What a great timing. After the shower at her place, her two daughters gave me cute handmade cards. Now I can finish packing.

Saloni looked around the house to make sure that I did not leave anything. Tithi and Shilpa also offered to help the packing. Mavshi Bhavana put each spice in small ziplock bags for me to take home. Then the girls said, "We have a gift for you" and gave me a beautiful pair of earrings. When I wear them, I will be able to feel them closely. There I felt like crying already.

Aparna and her daughters whom I just saw came back to offer me a ride to the airport. We took a group picture and put my luggage in her car. I then thanked Mavshi Bhavana one last time sincerely. She has done so much for me. Without her, my India stay has not been this comfortable and joyful. Every conversation I had with her was filled with her great sense of humor and genuine love. As I recalled the time I spent with her, I could not finish my sentences and started to cry. I sobbed like a little girl. She hugged me and said, "Everything will be all right. Be happy." I thanked Tithi and Shilpa and got in the car with Saloni and Aparna's daughters.

On the way to the airport, Saloni put her arm around my shoulder and gently pulled my head onto her shoulder and held my hand with her other hand. Tears of appreciation kept rolling down on my cheeks, and my face was a mess. "In life, we can meet such wonderful people. The world is beautiful because it has these people. Oh, how loved I am... What a blessing..."

In India, many people thought that I was from the northern east part of India. (There are many people who look like me. The reason whey they did not think I was from Japan was because I was speaking English fluently, according to them.) When they found out that I was not from the northern east part of India, they asked, "Where are you from?" For this question, I did not have a straight answer. "I was born and raised in Japan, but I've been living in Hawaii which is a part of America for the past 12 years" was my answer. I could not be fully "Japanese" because I haven't lived in Japan for the past 12 years (I didn't know its popular culture, details of politics, and so on). "American" would be definitely a wrong answer; I've not lived in the continental America anyway although I've visited numerous times. "Hawaiian" would be also wrong. So I had to ask myself, "What am I? Who am I?" After some thoughts, the answer I got was that I am an Earthian or Earthnese (I made them up) or in other words, a citizen of the world. I am an Earthian who was born and raised in a country called Japan.

Yes, we are all citizens of the world...
I sat down at an airplane seat while thinking about this, and with the particular exhaustion you feel after crying from your heart, I easily fell asleep while repeating the words Mavshi Bhavana said.

"Everything will be all right. Be happy."

It was also the firs time in a month that I saw Japanese letters printed in public.
When I saw it, I felt this strange relief. I guess it was like seeing someone I knew.

At the Mumbai Airport, I saw toilet paper for the first time in a month.
For some reason, there were 3 different ways rolls of toilet paper were placed.
I was caught in surprise and didn't know which one to use :D

Last Days of India Visit

When I first caught myself listening to iPod (to review a dance piece) and eating something while riding a rickshaw, I thought, "Wow." You may think what's the big deal? Well, it was an indication that I was quite getting accustomed to Indian life.

For the first two weeks or so, there was no way I could listen to music or eat. I did not feel at peace at all while riding it. One, I didn't really know the roads, so I wasn't sure if I was really taken to where I wanted to go, so I was trying to remember some landmarks for the next time. Two, the traffic in India was very thrilling. I crunched my fist many times, and there were moments I wanted to close my eyes (but didn't because I was a curious George).

I was just getting used to the whole life scene in Mumbai, but then the time to leave was right around the corner.

I got to see one more performance before I left India.

After the Goa performance I caught a cold.
I think that the month-long exhaustion came out. From being in a foreign land, daily coping with dust and car exhaust, dancing every single day, and to physically and mentally preparing for the Goa performance, I was holding it all together, but when the Goa performance was over, probably I released some tension, and I let the guard go for a moment, and that's the moment when the built-up exhaustion gashed out and turned into cold.  I thought I would get better soon. I took a day to rest in bed and did nothing.

But it did not get better and kept getting worse a bit by bit. Then I had this workshop to hold. I was given this wonderful opportunity to dance Izanai Yosakoi dance for the students of Smitalay (Smitalay is my teacher's dance school) as well as to teach them the Seicho-bushi (the original song and dance). I did not want to cancel at the last minute. I was honored that many people including children attended with interest and that I was given this opportunity to share my culture. This was made possibly by my new friend, Aparna (the sitar player) for initiating and organizing and my teacher, Jhelum-tai for providing the space and attending herself and dancing the Seicho-bushi! Big thanks to these ladies. By the way, I asked Jhelum-tai if it would be okay to wear Tabi (the Japanese shoes) inside the dance studio (shoes are not allowed there) before I danced :)

These photo above and below are shots from a video, so the quality is not that high, but maybe they can give you some idea.

I owned a piece of cotton cloth that was meant for an Indian sari. I had taken it with me to India thinking that somehow I could utilize it. I did! I brought it to a tailor to have a browse made using a portion of that cloth. I hadn't owned a sari for dance practice, so it was just perfect. The mens in the photo above are the tailors (the left gentleman made it). He did it in 3 days. When I first went there, Saloni kindly took me there, and he measured me so quickly. When it was supposed to be done, Saloni went back there to pick it up, but it was a bit too small, so the next day I went back by myself, and he fixed it right away before my eyes.

There were catalogues, and you could choose a style of browse that you wanted. I didn't know that there were so many. I chose the most basic one. I did not want the back to be so low.

Saloni and I were playing with our cameras. She also loves photography, so she owns a Canon (single‐lens reflex camera). She has been taking such wonderful photos while she studies to be a lawyer. Here is her site. (It's facebook page, but anyone should be able to view it without facebook account since it's a public page.)

Speaking Saloni, I have to share this cool story. When Aparna (Aparna is Saloni's aunt) was driving Saloni and me to Aparna's house, there was a bus heading toward on the opposite lane. The driver was driving aggressively and did not follow the rule, so her car was pushed aside against the sidewalk. The bus was passing us so close by (like one inch apart). I thought that we were going to wait until the bus passes, but Aparna from the driver's seat and Saloni from the passenger's seat (I was sitting in the back seat) started to protest. Because they were speaking in Marati, I didn't understand at all, but I guess they were saying something like, "What are you doing? Did you see the sign?" Saloni even got out of the car and spoke to the driver very assertively and confidently. I was really impressed. I could totally see her being a lawyer. They both looked really cool. When we got home, they said, "Women power!" and started to laugh. At that moment, I thought that India's future was bright.

Bye Bye, Goa

In India, we can see many different gods.
I myself do not follow any particular religion.
I think I am spiritual but I am not religious.
I think I call the general loving energy that is beyond any name God.

It was the first visit to Goa. I did not get to go to any famous beach there, but more importantly, I got to see my dear friend from Japan and met new friends. And Goa was where I had my very first performance in India, so in that sense, I think I will remember Goa very vividly.

Goa - The 2nd Day ゴア2日目

A view from the top floor of the hotel

During this India trip, it was so interesting that I got to see two of my close Japanese friends in India. One was Chinatsu as you may have seen the blog post about our reunion. The other reunion was Makiko from Kochi. Her Australian husband has a job in Goa, and that's the reason why she was there. They now have a 3-year-old son, and they are going to move out of Goa at the end of this May, so it was a great timing. I enjoyed catching up with her and meetin her son for the first time.

I also got to meet Makiko's friends, Mr. Ryuji Sueoka and Mrs. Chizu Sueoka. Ryuji is a professional soccer player who has been playing in India for the past some years. Wow. Whenever I meet a Japanese person who is working very hard and flourishing in a foreign country, I get so much inspiration. And from what I've heard, Chizu seems to support her husband with all her might, and their teamwork in India sounded so adorable and full of love for one another.

After I enjoyed spending time with Japanese friends in Japanese, I went back to the hotel and had lunch with other performers and took a little rest, and then I started to get ready for the program.

This was the function in which we performed.

in preparation...
準備中
It takes a while to properly prepare for Odissi dance performance. The costume itself is not that hard to put on, but putting up hair, make-up, and all the jewels takes time and focus. As a last step, we paint the tips of fingers and toes red. You may think that Odissi dancers do not move much with this much decorations all over us, but we do. We turn, jump, and sometimes do some acrobatic moves that are called gotipua style, so you have to put them on correctly and securely.

I consider this prep time as a meditative time. As I put my heart into each step, I start to feel calm and focused in the zone of dancing. Odissi dance originated in temples. It was danced for God as an offering (as many traditional dance forms were). When I decorate myself, I feel as if I am getting ready for a wedding ceremony (though I've never had one). I quietly think in my heart, "Yes, Creator, I marry you again and again."

The program began.
It was a great honor to be able to stand on the same stage with my teacher and her senior students. I had not expected this, so I was surprised when I was told I could dance with them. I felt that I was not qualified yet. Everyone has been dancing many more years than I have. I thought all of the following things in my head, "She (my teacher) is probably letting me have this experience just because I am visiting all the way from Hawaii. But wait a minute, if I looked too terrible, she would not have allowed me on the stage no matter where I came from, so it means that I probably looked okay enough to be on the stage with them, and I guess that's an honor, but I really need to work hard to fit in and to respect this opportunity."

No matter what my teacher's intention was, once I am committed to a stage, there is responsibility to fulfill. This time, it was not such a long program, so we performed 5 dance pieces all together. I danced in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th piece. The 1st piece was new to me, but I only danced first 5 minutes or so, so it was fairly easy to remember, but I repeated over and over not to forget and make it right. When there was anything unclear, I asked the senior dancers or the teacher and made it clear in my mind. What was actually more challenging was to overwrite what I already knew. I already knew the 3rd and 5th dance pieces by learning them from Sarala on Maui, but they were slightly different. In Odissi, the same dance piece could be performed slightly differently if you've learned it in a different phase than others. Sarala learned the pieces one generation before Jhelum-tai's current senior students did.

Where I learned to trace the right eye first, they traced left one first. Where I learned to jump once before starting to stamp, they did not jump and began stamping right away. Where I learned to keep right hand shikara mudra in front of my belly and left hand hansasya out, they kept both arms chouka arms. Habits are interesting. Without concusses effort, you cannot break the habit and make a change. If I dance alone, it would not matter, but when I dance in a group, it is important that I do the same thing as everyone else, so that the harmony won't be disturbed. I was pointed out many times, and with everyone's great patience, I was able to re-learn. When I practiced alone, I worked on those numerous parts that were different from what I've learned individually over and over until I felt that the new way was "normal" to me. It was fascinating to witness how an unfamiliar sensation slowly diminished in my body.

These stage shots were taken by my friend Makiko who appeared at the top of this blog entry. She came with her camera and took without flash. What a nice gesture and gift these have become. Thank you so much, Makiko-san!

I danced the beginning part of Vande Mataram which is
India's national anthem. It has such a beautiful melody.

Then I danced Saveri Pallavi with other 3 senior dancers.

This yellow costume was Smitalay's (my teacher's dance school). The one
I brought from Maui did not match with other dancers' styles and colors.

Moksha

Moksha is the concluding item of an Odissi program. Moksha means “spiritual liberation.” In this piece, dancers become one with the Universe and God.

You end with 3 "om." 3

The organizer introduced each one of us.

I was relieved that it was over :)

And felt a little sad that it was over.

After the program, with everyone

With friendly, humorous, and talented musicians

When I was watching the 4th item which was a solo piece done by my teacher, just like when I as watching Anusaran, I had goose bumps and tears running on my cheeks. I told myself, "You have one more item to dance, and your eye make-up will come down. Stop crying." But I could nto repress the feeling that came upon me. There was something hard to describe but felt an arrow was shot in my heart. "Oh, how beautiful..."

Of course the dance itself was beautiful. But I think that I was more touched by a sincere dedication and commitment of a soul who has devoted herself to this ancient art form by learning, performing, and passing on to the next generations. Her dedication was so beautiful. I think that my tears were also due to a deep appreciation of witnessing such beauty. What a great blessing it was. I thought, "Oh, how I wish to learn this art form more deeply and more seriously..."

The dance item had a story, but I did not know what kind of story. I was just guessing as I watched. She was acting many different characters all by herself. She is truly good at abhinaya (art of expression). There were many human emotions depicted. Toward the end of the dance, there was my favorite scene in which she looked as if she was ascending to heaven, and she had such a peaceful and joyful expression on her face as she turned around. It beautifully showed the condition of complete absence of fear and totally oneness with God. It amazed me how my teacher could show it, and someone choreographed it, and Odissi dance can show it so beautifully! Can you imagine how exited I was? I was so excited quietly, alone from the side of the stage.

The piece she performed is called "Drupadi." It is one of ancient stories of India. I asked my teacher what the story was afterward, and she told me that there used to be 5 brothers. Each one had a special power. One of them was good at archery. At one competition, he won, and the prize was Drupadi as his wife. He took her home and told his mother, "Look mom, what I got," but before he could finish his sentence, his mother told him, "Whatever you got, share it equally with your brothers." This is how she has become a wife of 5 brothers. At one point, these brothers were playing a gamble with a mean king from another country. They kept losing and there was nothing to bet, so they bet Drupadi, their wife. They regretfully lost the game, and Drupadi was taken by the mean king. The king tried to undress Drupadi's sari in front of everyone to shame the brothers. As you know, sari is made out of one long piece of fabric. If you pull one side, whoever is wearing it will turn around. As she was turning around, she begged the lord Krishna to help her, and Krishna appeared and made a miracle. He put a magic on sari, and it never ended. The mean king got tired of pulling and gave up. The scene I loved was the scene when Drupadi found the lord Krishna!
