During the winter break, my classroom will be deep cleaned (this
happens once a year), so all the furniture were moved to one side.

To celebrate the winter solstice, I went to the top of the world (on Maui) with my friend.

The first day of winter break was spent by bringing my car to a dealer shop for the semiannual check up at 7 am, by going to a dental appointment at 9 am, and by seeing a doctor for a follow-up at 2 pm.

I didn't mean to schedule them in one same day, but they naturally happened. It's so hard to get to these things while school is in session. Oh, a visit to Office Max (to buy a new pencil sharpener for my classroom) and to a post office (I finally mailed out my hair), and to a bank (to deposit a check which is a good thing!) were added in between those appointments.

Phew. I took a nice break between some of them, so that I wouldn't exhaust myself. At the end of the day, I practiced (Odissi dance). It's the treat I was looking forward to all day.

Went to a gym class at 6 am. Surfed at Hookipa from 7 to 7:45 am. Went back to the gym to take another class (Power Plate) at 8. Can you tell how stoked I am?? Some kind of chemical (I don't know what) created from the morning exercise is rushing through my body. Winter break, here I come!! Now, I'm going to take a morning nap and will get on a translation job that is due soon.

That afternoon, I had the 4th computer lesson with a lady who cannot see. Her perseverance and determination are admirable. In order for her to use the Contacts on MacBook, she needs to know how the Contacts' layout is set up. I didn't know how to explain that to her (words have their limit), so I made this texturized (bumped) sheet, so that she can feel and "see" in her mind (the pictures of the butterfly didn't have a meaning, but it looks pretty for us who can see; I just used available sheets of papers).

When you're using the VoiceOver feature, you don't use a mouse, and the computer lets you move in a certain way. You have to know this layout in order to understand how to navigate yourself.

I would like to thank her for teaching me many lessons, such as not taking what we have for granted and sticking to what you put your mind on no matter how hard it is. All of these may sound like cliche, but when I'm with her, they have a whole different level of meaning.

One of wonderful gifts I received on Christmas day is a couple of spines of Wana (sea urchin) from surfing (my first time ever in my 12 years of Maui life). Luckily someone at the beach had vinegar, so I soaked my foot in it for 20 min or so, and the spines got noticeably smaller. Wow, vinegar!

I didn't mind the pain at all, but the first thing came to my mind was, "Oh, shoot! Can I dance?" Today (the following day of the incident), I danced. It hurt a bit, but it was doable, so I think I'm good to go. Phew. Well, it was a good reminder that the nature is out there, and chances are that we are hurting it more than it is hurting us. (Sorry to the wana who got stepped on by me.)

Someone else at the beach told me to make paste out of MSG and bitter and put it on the affected area. Apparently, it dissolves the calcium that composes wana.

For the first time in 4 months, I surfed.
I injured my right wrist, so I hadn't been able to push the board down.
It's still painful, but it's much better to the point where I can do duck dive.
Also, it's been quite busy. The new school year began at the beginning of August. While I was having much fun with the new kids, the months of August and September flew by, and before I knew it, October was here.
I was hesitant to surf after such a long time, but a part of me really missed my "big friend".
I told myself, "You know what? Just paddle out. Don't even worry about catching a wave."
So I went.
Just being in the ocean felt AMAZING.

Correcting my students' spelling tests (as you can see, they were working on long i sound)

I found a good way to get my weekend, bubbled-over teaching job done.
When I didn't feel like working at home (I don't blame her), I took myself out to a nice cafe and treated me with yummy drink (in this case, strawberry smoothie).
I found it to be an effective way to get things done.

Correcting tests take quite some time. It varies depend on a test, but say, it takes 5 minutes to correct one student's test with some thoughtful comments, then analyzing what the student's weakness/strength is, and entering the score into a spreadsheet. I don't write the correct answers for them, though. I have my students correct with a red pencil on their own, so that they can know what mistakes they made and how they made. Going back to the time topic, I have 25 students, so 25 x 5 = 125 minutes. It's 2 hours. Correcting a test takes 2 hours. Sometimes, I wish to hire like a high school student to correct them for me, but then I cannot tell who is really getting it and who needs review. And it's against confidentiality, and I won't be able to fully take responsibility. If I were to double check if this high school student did a good job or not, it doesn't really meet my original purpose of hiring one.

Anyhow, I hope to balance between work and play time well.

Rain of Love

A parent of my student baked these cute mini cupcakes for the students.

Happy Belated Valentine's Day!

I hope you all felt love all around you and in you especially on that day.
I had a wonderful day with my lovely students and two adorable kids (Yasi and Sy) who are like my nephew and niece after school. It was a day to receive lots of genuine love from the next generation that is about to forge ahead into the new future. I hope that we let children remind us what love is by the way they admire the world, and we want to love them as much as we can. I think that's our kuleana (responsibility) as grown-ups in this world.

On Valentine's Day, I received this India visa!
I felt like it was a love letter from India saying, "Welcome!"
The colors were cute, too.
I will be going there from the end of March to the end of April to study Odissi.
It's because of you for me to be able to have reached this far.
Thank you.

On weekends, I usually make pancakes in the morning.
I bake gluten free ones although I am not allergic to wheat.
I put Maui honey and love the luxurious time that I don't have to rush to get out of the door.

Do you remember that I broke the top part of my blender like 3 weeks ago (see here)?
I ordered the top part, and it came.
Yay. I can use it again.

I love quinoa.

Last weekend, I had a reason to be on the west side of Maui (it takes more than an hour to get that side from where I live), and I had an opportunity to surf at D.T. Fleming for the first time. I didn't know when I would come come back to that side, so I jumped in although it was a short 20-minute session. It was such a windy day everywhere on Maui, but this spot was fine. I had fun and simply glad to have my world expanded a bit more.

My students have been learning about camouflage. This was a question from the unit's comprehension and writing test. I loved this student's answer :) (There is no correct answer for this question. It is to see if students can relate themselves to the content of reading.)

There is only two more weeks until the Honolulu Festival!!
This was taken after our second to the last rehearsal.
You can see how the dancers are getting excited :)

Lately, Maui had so much rain. Finally last Thursday, there was a flood warning. I took the photo above near where I live. It goes down to a mini gulch, and there was a river formed. I even heard that a school bus got stuck in it, and the children got out of the windows.

As you can see, brown muddy water was running down the road.

I drive this road everyday, and it has turned into a river.

So, this morning, when I saw the fun for the first time in a while, I felt very happy.
Good morning to you, the Sun!

Going Back to the Ocean

Since school started, I can't really update my blog regularly, so I think what I'll most likely end up doing is to update weekly with photos, and it will be more like a picture diary.

Here is an entry about the last week.

I bought a beautiful bunch of pohole (Hawaiian fern) (see photo above) form one my students' parents' farm at the farmers market in Kula, so I prepared it for the first time. I simply dipped it in a hot water for 10 seconds or so and put it in a bowl of ice water. Then I cut it into smaller pieces and then tossed with Bragg amino acid and apple cider vinegar. That's it. Simple but yummy. It's a bit slimy just so you know.

Speaking of Kula, there is my favorite honey farm in Kula. I get my honey from there always. (Check out their website.) I finished a jar, so I poured hot water to make an instant honey tea; I didn't want to waste any honey.

I am very excited that the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is coming to Maui from India in February!! I've bought a ticket. I saw them maybe 6 years ago when they came to Maui, but at that time, I just began taking Sarala's Odissi classes, so I wasn't really familiar with the dance form, and all I remember was, "It's beautiful," but I didn't have much experience and knowledge to fully appreciate the experience. This time, I think I would have more meaningful experience.
If you live on Maui, please do not let this rare opportunity to see one of the classical Indian dance forms! It will be Thursday, February 21st at MACC. You can see more info and purchase tickets here.

One day, Haleakala was so clear again. When I see something this large and gentle, I'm inspired to be big-hearted.

There is no picture, but on Tuesday, when I picked Sy (my dance teacher's 3-year-old son) up from his daycare today, and as I held him up to put him in the car seat, he wrapped his little arms around my neck and said, "Nana (he nicknamed me Nana when he was still a baby), I love you." It melted me into a puddle of water. What a blessing.

Most American people would have probably watched this already, but here is President Obama's 2nd inaugural address. I think that he is a very good speaker. I wondered what those slaves back in 1800's would say if they see him being the president of the U.S. We've come far, but not far enough. We have to walk the talk. Let us blossom into the full human potential. What can I do for that vision is what I ask myself everyday.

I hadn't surfed once since school started on January 3rd, but finally, I made it to the beach last Thursday (January 24th). I had a quite full day that day, so I got there at 5:30 pm and hesitated to go out because the sun was about to set, but I thought even a half-hour would be better than nothing. And I was so glad I jumped in even for 30 minutes. I had so much fun just being held in the mother ocean again. Actually, on this day, I woke up at 2:30 am (naturally), so I was able to have a long day. I think it was due to me going to bed at 8 pm the previous night. When I woke up, I wondered how I would be doing in the afternoon, but I was fine.

On Saturday, I attended the monthly haiku poem gathering (I wrote about it here), and one of the older yet strong and sharp minded members named Mrs. Sanae brought home-made mochi for all of us to take home. Wow. I was so grateful.

On Sunday (today), I woke up early to go surf again. On the way to the ocean, I saw this full-moon setting over the west Maui mountains. I said, "Good morning to you, Full Moon. Thank you for relaying the light from the sun. See you later."

The waves were smaller than last Thursday, but I had lots of fun.
But after I came home, I had a mean headache, stomachache, nausea, and chills and spent half day lying down. I slept a bit and am now as fine as being able to update my blog. I wonder what that was. Sorry, the Izanai Yosakoi dancers that I had to cancel the class today.

And of course more things are happening in my life than I can comfortably mention here, but all and all, life is beautiful no matter what, and I am here to embrace and make the best out it.

A New Year Has Come 新年がやってきた

It's blurry, but I like it. It's like a distant memory.

Happy New Year!

There were so many fire works bursting in the air on the New Year's eve. The poor dog of Sarala named Buster was so scared and hid in the dance studio where he'd never entered before (he is not allowed). It was fun to watch the fire works for a little while, but the show went on even after the midnight, and I was done. Luckily, my right ear is almost deaf (since I was young), so I put my left ear against the pillow and could fall in asleep. It's really convenient, you know like when there is a mosquito or fly in the room, if I do this trick, I wouldn't hear a thing.

Oh, before I went to bed, my parents called me from Japan to say, "Happy New Year!" It was nice to hear their voice. Japan is 19 hours ahead of Hawaii, so my parents welcomed the new year before me. Yesterday (on their New Year's Day), I had a Skype session with them while they were visiting my grandma's home. I could see my 88-year old grandma. It was so nice. New Year's Day is the biggest holiday in Japan, and I went home around this time of a year for the past 4 consecutive years, but I could not this year, so I was happy to have a glimpse of the holiday spirit.

On New Year's Day, Alexa and I woke up early and went to Kanaha Beach near the Kahului Airport to surf. This was my second time to surf there. Thanks to Alexa, I am experiencing new things. I guess making a new friend means that I get to visit her/his world, and some parts of their world may be completely new territories to me.

As you can see, the waves break pretty far from the beach, so you have to paddle out for awhile. It's tiring for my arms, but it's worth paddling out. The waves are so much fun.

In the afternoon, I did a self-practice of Odissi dance for an hour and half. It felt wonderful, and I thanked gods for letting me dance. I tend to think about many things on the New Year's Day, and what I wrote exactly a year ago sums it up well.

Well, here are my new year's resolutions.
  • Go to India and study hard and come home safely (I'm planning to go there in spring to study Odissi dance).
  • Be punctual.
  • Attempt to see the "light" within each person and each occurrence that I encounter no matter when and what.
  • Tell my students how much I love them daily.
  • Make an intentional "downtime" at the end of each day.
  • Learn a new recipe per month.
  • Surf once a week.
  • Continue to seek a life style that is rooted in nature.
  • Grow my saving account :) so that I can create "Akari Scholarship" to provide financial support to people someday.

I wish that the year 2013 is going to be filled with so much joy for you.
Here we go!

Swim, Dance, Eat, and Surf

I've lived on Maui for 11 years, but I had not swam in the Pukalani Pool. (Only a 10-minute drive from where I live.) Well, I guess I did once when I first visited, but it was almost 12 years ago, so the memory was not that vivid. Thanks to my new friend, Alexa who is currently visiting Maui, I had an opportunity to revisit the pool! Since she came to Maui a month ago, she's been swimming here quite often. I learned something new about Maui from a non-resident! Maui must have so many great spots that I don't know yet.

She and I swam for about an hour. It felt good and refreshing.
I used to swim to compete (when I was in elementary school).
At that time, my dream was to be an Olympic swimmer...
You know, as a child, you dream of many things.
All the memories from that time came back.

There is a pool for children.
There is no entrance fee!

The view from the pool is like this.
I think I will go and swim once awhile.

We had an end-of-year dinner party with the Maui Izanai Yosakoi dancers after our last practice of this year.
We went to the Saigon Cafe in Wailuku.
It's a Vietnamese restaurant and was one of Suga's favorite restaurants before she passed away.

It was remodeled into a modern look.
I am thankful that I was able to dance with these great friends this year.
Most dancers have learned the Maholoba dance from the beginning to the end.
Great job!

Ho`okipa

I've been surfing quite a bit lately.
(The waves in the above photo are too big for me.
I don't feel comfortable in this size, so I don't surf there.
When Ho`okipa is pounding like this, I go to Paia Bay.)
I usually surf the first thing in the morning as the sun rises.
I can tell a huge difference in my mood after each session.
No matter how baffled I am, once I jump in the ocean, I feel super positive.
I simply feel so great and happy.
That's the magic the mother ocean has for all of us.

When I surf, my arm muscles develop like this.
I thought it was looking funny (interesting), so I took a shot.
