At the end of September, I flew to San Francisco, California to attend my friend Tenzin's wedding.
In San Francisco, I stayed at Alexa's place.
I met Alexa this past winter. She housesat my dance teacher Sarala's house while Sarala and her family visited India for a month. At that time, I was still living downstairs of Sarala's place, so I was able to hang out with Alexa quite a bit. She is an architect. She is a surfer, a traveler, and she is a very nice person with a great taste (in fashion, food, and etc.).
I left Thursday night (my flight departed 9 pm), and I arrived 5 hours later at 5 am San Francisco time (CA is 3 hours ahead of Hawaii). Oh, how I love a direct flight! I slept the whole time.
I then picked up a rental car which I reserved when I purchased the air ticket (it was a great deal). Before the sun rose, I started to drive in the big city and arrived at Alexa's house without any problem. Phew. Alexa was already up and welcomed me warmly. She then went to work, and I immediately fell asleep on her comfortable couch. I slept about 3 hours.
The above photo was the first thing that grabbed my heart in San Francisco - the morning sun was lighting Alexa's living room. I thought it was perfect - the red chair, silhouette of window frame and the colors...
サンフランシスコでは、アレクサの家に泊まらせてもらいました。アレクサとは昨年の年末に出会いました。サララ先生と先生の家族がインドへ行っている間、アレクサが犬達と家の世話をするために一ヶ月滞在し、その頃私はまだサララ先生の家の一階に住んでいたので、そうやってアレクサと私は出会い、一緒に過ごしたのでした。彼女は建築家であり、サーファーであり、旅行家であり、そして色々な面においてとてもセンスがピカいちな人です。
マウイを木曜日の夜に出ました。21時の便に乗りました。そして５時間後、カリフォルニア時間で言う朝の5時に到着（カリフォルニアはハワイより3時間進んでいる）。あぁ、直行便で良かった。5時間の飛行時間寝続けました。
航空券を購入したときに同時に予約をしておいたレンタルカーをピックアップして、朝日の昇る前に大きな都市に乗り込みました。無事迷うことなく、アレクサの家に着きました。あぁ、良かった。アレクサはもう起きていて、快く迎えてくれました。それからアレクサは出勤していき、私はアレクサのとっても心地の良いソファで仮眠をさせてもらいました。3時間くらい寝ました。
上の写真は、サンフランシスコに着いて一番初めに私の心を掴んだものです。朝日がアレクサのリビングルームに差し込んできたところ。「わーお、完璧だ」と思いました。赤い椅子の位置も、窓枠のシルエットも、その色たちも。
When I woke up, I was quite hungry, so I really appreciated this salad Alexa made and left for me. It was so yummy!
Then I did a translation job that was due soon. It took me about 2 hours, and I was done. It always feels great when I click the "Send" button with an attached translated document.
Until Alexa came home, I relaxed at her place. I even took a hot bath for the first time in a month or so. It was heavenly. I think I really miss having a bath at home.
起きたときは結構お腹が空いていましたので、アレクサが作っておいてくれたサラダがとっても有り難かったです。すっごーく美味しかった！
それから締め切りが間近であった翻訳の仕事を終らせました。2時間くらいで終わりました。いつもメールの「送信」ボタンをクリックした直後の達成感というか、爽快感というか、「あぁ、終った〜！」という感覚、好きですね。
それからアレクサが帰ってくるまでお家でのんびりさせてもらいました。一ヶ月振りくらいに湯船にも浸かれました。すごく極楽でした。やっぱりお家に湯船が欲しいなぁ。
After she came home, we went to watch a movie called "In a World."
I'm not gonna get into the storyline or detailed feedback, but to put it into one word, it was great!
We laughed, and it reminded me of the importance of following one's dream.
アレクサが帰ってきてから、「イン・ア・ワールド」という映画を観るため、二人で歩いて映画館へ行ってきました。あらすじやら感想やら省かせて頂きますけど、一言で言えば、とても良かった！笑わせてもらいましたし、夢を追う事の大切さを再度思いました。

Before we watched the movie, Alexa showed me a Japanese town and took me to this Japanese grocery store called Nijiya Market.
映画の前に、アレクサがジャパニーズタウンに連れて行ってくれました。そこでニジヤマーケットという日本食品を取り扱うお店に行きました。
There were many things that we don't see on Maui.
わー、マウイでは見ないものも沢山売られてる〜！
On Maui, one pack of enoki mushroom costs $2 or more, so I've never bought it. The price itself is not the problem, but knowing its price in Japan, (it's usually 3 packs for $1 in Japan), I just cannot buy it.
マウイではエノキ一袋が200円以上するので買ったことありません。
日本での値段を知っているのでね。
After the movie, Alexa took me to this restaurant called Out the Door. We ate at the counter seats. Every dish was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. I highly recommend.
映画の後は、このアウト・ザ・ドアというレストランに、アレクサが連れて行ってくれました。カウンター席で二人並んで食べました。美味しいし、お値段もそんなに高くないし、皆さんもサンフランシスコに行ったら、お試しあれ。
This was my companion during this trip - Kia's Soul.
It had a small turning circle, so it was easy to maneuver and park in this busy city.
The only thing I didn't really like was the loud noise it made whenever I stepped on the gas even not that heavily.
私の今回の旅の供。
Kia社のソウル。小回り利いて、運転（特に駐車）し易かったですよ。
ただ、アクセルを少しでも踏み込むと、ブォーンとすごい音が出るのには閉口しましたけど。
The next morning, I left at 8 am and went to Vishnu's Odissi class.
Yes, Vishnu lives in San Francisco.
翌朝は8時に出て、ヴィシュヌ先生のオディッシィダンスのクラスへ。
そう、ヴィシュヌ先生はサンフランシスコ在住です。
For the first time, I drove around under the sun in San Francisco!
Up, up, I went, and then I saw the blue ocean!!
サンフランシスコの町並みをお日さまの下で運転するのは、この日が初めてでした。
坂をぐんぐんと登っていくと、青い海が見えました！
Then, I went down the hill.
そして今度は坂を下りていきます。

The Golden Gate Bridge!
It was my second time to see it and cross it, but it's really fun to see it again.
(The first time was like 8 years ago.)
ゴールデンゲートブリッジですね！
今回で見るのも渡るのも2回目でしたけど、何度見てもワクワクしますね。
（初めてのときは8年くらい前のこと。）
I drove to a northern city which took about 30 minutes.
I arrived too early, so I went to a cafe and had a cup of tea.
サンフランシスコの北にある街へ30分ほど運転して行きました。
ちょっと早く着き過ぎたので、カフェに入ってお茶を飲みました。
At the entrance of the cafe, this big dog was waiting patiently for its owner.
そのカフェの入り口で、この大きなワンちゃんが飼い主さんを待っていました。
That morning, I took two classes back to back.
It was great meeting his students in CA.
My whole being was filled with happiness after his classes.
その日は、二つのクラスを続けて取らせてもらいました。
ヴィシュヌ先生のカリフォルニアの生徒さんたちと出会うことも出来、嬉しかったです。
クラスの後は、またヴィシュヌ先生のクラスを取れた嬉しさでいっぱいでした。
For lunch, I stopped at a cafe called M.H. Bread and Butter.
お昼は、近くにあった、M.H. Bread and Butterというカフェへ入りました。
Their food nourished my dancing body.
一汗かいた後の体に染み渡りました。
San Francisco was in the midst of Autumn.
The colored leaves and the high sky reminded me how much I actually miss the season.
サンフランシスコは秋真っ盛りでした。
紅葉した木、抜けるような空を見ていると、秋という季節をどれだけ恋しく思っていたか感じさせられました。
Then I drove back to Alexa's place, took a shower, and then took a quick nap before I drove to the wedding place. I don't get dressed like this on Maui at all, so for a memory, I took a photo of myself reflected on a big mirror which was available at the ground level of the apartment building.
アレクサの家へ戻って、シャワーを浴びて、少し昼寝をして、結婚式の会場へ。
こんな格好をすることは、マウイではなかなか無いのでね、マンションのロビーにある鏡に写る自分を記念に撮っておきました。
On Saturday evening, the downtown successfully engulfed me in the thick traffic jam.
Shoot! By the time I thought I should have taken a different route was too late.
I could not escape anywhere.
土曜日の夕方、ダウンタウン（サンフランシスコの中心地）は、まんまと私と私の車を交通渋滞に飲み込みました。
「しまった！違う道を通るべきだった」と思ったときには、もう遅い。
にっちもさっちもいきません。
It didn't move at all for awhile.
I was worried that I would be late.
全然、動かないよ〜。
遅れるよ〜。
There was not much to do, so I studied each building carefully.
I someday want to climb the ladder just for fun.
仕方ないので、周りの建物をじっくり見ることに。
あの非常用階段を、非常時以外のときに登ったり下りたりしてみたいな。

The second bridge to cross that day - the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (known locally as the Baby Bridge.)
あぁ、やっと解放されました！
その日二つ目の橋、サンフランシスコ・オークランド・ベイ・ブリッジです。
地元の人はベイブリッジと呼びます。
I got to the place and parked in a big parking lot and saw the other side.
The Golden Gate Bridge which I crossed that morning was seen far in the horizon.
やっと会場に着いて、広々とした駐車場に停めて、向こう岸を見たら、その日の朝に渡ったゴールデンゲートブリッジが遠くに見えました。
This was the invitation I received.
I was very honored that she invited me although we hadn't seen each other for some years.

ここ最近は何年も会えていなかったのに、こうして招待状を送ってくれて嬉しかったです。
At the entrance, these things were placed. I heard that it's Tibetan tradition.
I think the photo above, the bundle of firewood, symbolized warmth - maybe the warmth of family. Also, in a mountain country like Tibet, it must get cold quite severely in winter, so I think that having firewoods may mean abundance.
The photo below is Tibetan beer. In Japan, we offer sake for gods. Maybe there are similar meanings.
入り口にこれらの物が置かれていました。チベットの伝統だそうです。
上の薪は「暖」を意味するのかな？
家族の温かさ、また薪が豊富にあるということはチベットのような寒さの厳しい地域では、豊かさにも繋がると思います。そういう意味でも豊かさも象徴しているように思いました。
下の樽に入っているものは、チベット式のビールだそうです。これも日本人がお酒の樽を飾るのと同じ感覚でしょうか。

Actually, Tenzin danced Yosakoi with me when she used to live on Maui, so I danced a piece for her as a gift.
実はテンジンはマウイに住んでいるとき、よさこいを一緒に踊ってくれました。なので、彼女の披露宴でよさこいをプレゼントとして踊りました。
I also got to see a traditional Tibetan folk dance.
チベットの伝統的なフォークダンスを見ることが出来ました。
The circle grew bigger and bigger.
輪はどんどん大きくなっていきます。
I also danced a bit with them.
Tenzin's mother remembered me and pulled me in.
Dancing in a circle seems to be an universal way of celebrating a happy occasion.
Most of the guests were Tibetan people. They all live in the North America (I think except Tenzin's parents).
I knew a couple of people, but I didn't know most of them.
As I sat at a table by myself for a short period of time, I found myself watching the scene from a little distance. The beautiful Tibetan people (in and out) were celebrating their happy occasion in their traditional way as closely as they could. Then my thoughts extended to their ordeal - what they had to go through and are still going through.
They cannot go back to their home country even if they want to. Their home has been taken over.
Tenzin was born in Nepal after her parents escaped to Nepal.
Many moved to the U.S. and other countries. They are creating new lives at new places.
It is a big deal when someone comes to your house and tells you to leave and not come back again. Don't you think so? But this has happened to our earthly brothers and sisters. But not many people including myself don't think about it everyday.
There I was, witnessing a very happy occasion in the midst of a plight.
I did not know what I could do as a person. I quietly prayed, at least, for my dear friend's happiness and her people's well-being, and that someday they can step on the soil where they came from.
私も混ざって、少し踊らせてもらいました。
テンジンのお母さんが私の事を覚えてくださっていて、手を引いてくれました。
おめでたいことを祝うのに輪になって踊るというのは、世界共通のことなのでしょうね。
ほとんどの方がチベット人でした。皆さん（きっとテンジンのご両親以外）アメリカかカナダに住まわれています。
数人顔見知りの方がいましたけど、ほとんど知らない方ばかりでした。
しばしの間一人でテーブルに座ったとき、その場を少し離れたところから見ている私がいました。外も内も美しいチベット人の方達が、彼らの伝統に出来るだけ沿って、この晴れの日を祝っていました。そこから私の思考は、彼らが面した、そして今現在も面している試練について思いを馳せました。
彼らは帰りたくとも、故郷に帰れませn。彼らの故郷はとられてしまったのです。
テンジンは、テンジンのご両親がネパールに逃亡してから、ネパールで生まれました。
沢山の方がアメリカや他国に移り、新しい人生を開拓しています。
誰かが急にあなたの家に来て、「出て行け、そしてもう戻ってくるな」と言い、追い出されたらどうしますか？重大なことだと思いませんか？でもそれは起こりました。私たちの地球の姉弟たちに。しかしそのことについて、私も含め、沢山の人たちは毎日の生活の中で考えることはありません。
その大変な苦境の中の、喜ばしい日を私は目にしたのです。
私に何が出来るのか分かりませんでした。せめてもの思いで、大切な友人の幸せを、チベットの方たちの健康を、そして彼らがいつか故郷の地を踏めますようにと、心から祈りました。
I heard this was not their tradition, but both of them live in the U.S., so some western culture naturally gets integrated; they had a cake cut.
これはチベットの伝統文化には無いそうですけど、二人ともアメリカ在住ですから、西洋の文化も入り、二人でケーキカット。
Then, of course, the dance time!
Everyone knew the Bollywood dance and music well.
そしてもちろん、ダンスタイム！
みんなインドのお隣ネパール出身なだけあって、ボリウッドダンスばっちりでした。
Tenzin changed into a beautiful dress. Her beauty was emphasized.
The gentleman on the right is our friend He lives on Maui.
The lady on the left is Tenzin's brother's wife. She also lives on Maui.
We flew from Maui (separately), but I think Tenzin's parents flew the longest distance.
They came all the way from Nepal.
They must be so happy to see their loving daughter's happy day.

彼女の美しさが際立っていました。
右端に写っている方は、共通の友だちの一人。マウイ在住。
左端の方はテンジンのお兄さんの奥さん。
彼女もマウイ在住。みんなマウイから飛んできましたよ。
でも一番遠くから来られたのは、テンジンのご両親でしょうね。
ネパールから遥々来られました。
娘の晴れ姿を見られ、嬉しかったことと思います。

I came back at 1 am.

帰ってきたら朝の１時でした。
The next day (Sunday), I slept in and had a branch with Alexa at a restaurant called Grove on Fillmore Street. On the way to the restaurant, I enjoyed each house's design and colors.
翌朝（日曜日）はゆっくりと寝入り、遅い朝食（昼食も兼ねたもの）をフィルモアストリートにある、グローブというレストランでアレクサと食べました。そのストリートまで歩く間、見える家々のデザインを堪能しました。

量が多い。半分だけ食べて、もう半分は後で食べました。
I liked the colorful doors.

The prices were far from my range, though.
フィルモアストリートは、色々な面白いお店が連なっていました。
ウインドウショッピングだけで十分楽しかったです。

In the afternoon, I drove to Newark to take Vishnu's class again (but at a different location).
It took me an hour and half to get there.
I cannot believe that he drives like this every week.
午後にはニュアークというところであるヴィシュヌ先生のクラスを受けに行ってきました。（昨日とは違う場所です。）
片道１時間半かかりました。
先生、４つの違う教室で教えるためにこんなに毎週運転してるなんて・・・
On the way back to Alexa's place, I wanted to cross the third bridge that I hadn't crossed yet - the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge (commonly called San Mateo Bridge).
帰りは、サンフランシスコとオークランド側を結ぶ3本の橋のうち、まだ渡っていないサンマテオ・ヘイワードブリッジを渡ってみたくて、そちらから帰りました。
I couldn't really tell where the bridge itself began, but I really enjoyed the blinding blue sky.
どこから橋が始まったのかよく分かりませんでしたけど、でも目に刺さるような青空を楽しみました。
After I returned, Alexa and I did a grocery shopping together, and we were about to begin cooking dinner when her boyfriend called and offered to take us out for dinner. Well, we accepted his offer :) Near the restaurant, Alexa parked so skillfully. I was really impressed.
戻ってから、アレクサと一緒に食材を買いに行って、さぁ夕飯を一緒に作ろうというところで、アレクサの彼氏さんから電話があって、「二人を夕飯にお連れしたいのだけど」との有り難いオファー。お言葉に甘えて行ってきました。レストランの近くでアレクサがサクサク、スルスルと難しいところでパラレルパーキングするのを見て、「あっぱれ！」と言いたかったです。
Okay, one of many great lessons I learned during this trip was about a parking scene in a big city like this and how to park.
It was such a headache to find a parking space. It made me appreciate the fact that I can park pretty much anywhere, however long I want on Maui.
One time, I drove around for 10 minutes to find a spot, and I guess it's just normal.
And the traffic ticket you would get when you do something you are not supposed to is quite high. I heard that people learn different rules by getting tickets when they first move to San Francisco. It is like initiation to San Francisco...
First, you have to read the signs carefully.
この旅で学んだことの一つは、都市での駐車状況、またその仕方です。
サンフランシスコでは駐車スペースを見つけるのに頭を悩ましました。マウイのように、どこにでも、どれだけでも、スイスイ停められる現実を有り難く思いました。
ある時なんか、10分くらいグルグル探し回りました。（そんなことは普通らしい。）
そして違反した場合の罰金が結構高いらしく、サンフランシスコに初めて引っ越してきたときは、みんな何かしらの理由で交通違法カードをもらうそうです。そうやって色々なルールを覚えていくそうです。（そんなの嫌だぁ。）サンフランシスコに住むための登竜門みたいですね。
まず、駐車に関するサインを注意深く読まなくてはいけません。
（上のサインは、月曜日の朝9時から11時までは駐車禁止。清掃車がこちら側の写真を清掃するので。それ以外であれば、月曜日から金曜日までは朝8時から夕方6時までの間であれば、最長2時間まで可能。つまり、18時以降は翌朝の8時まで停めてもいい。そして週末は何時間でも停めてもいい。）
Next, this is common anywhere, but you cannot park in front of a fire hydrant.
次に、どこでも同じですが、消火栓の前はだめです。
Thirdly, you cannot park in front of a garage door (obviously, the house owner won't be able to come out, and if you do by accident, your car will be towed at your expense.) You can park between two garages. When I found a parking space in between two garages for the first time, I crossed to the other side of the road and simulated as if I was the house owners and asked myself, "Can I come out if I was them?"
Fourthly, you cannot park next to a red line for whatever reason. Sometimes, the paint is coming off, so you have to scrutinize. (Having a flash light is a good move at night.)
Oh, AND you cannot park right under the orbit of the moon. Please know where the moon rises and study the sky carefully.
(Just joking.)
3つ目に、ガラージドアの前に停めてはいけません。（家の人出られなくなりますからね。もし間違って停めちゃった場合は、牽引されちゃうらしいです。もちろんその牽引費も自分もち。）なので、ガラージとガラージの間にがんばって停めます。
私、やっと駐車スペースを見つけたとき、車から下りて、道路の反対側に渡って、何度もその家の人が問題なくガラージから出られるかシュミレーションしましたよ。
4つ目に、どんな理由であれ、赤く塗られたところの横には停められません。色々な理由で赤くなっています。色が剥げかけていることもあって、あなどれません。（夜は懐中電灯があると便利です。）
あっそれから、月の軌道の真下だとダメです。なのでよく天体を観察して、どこから月が昇ってくるか知っておいてください。
（冗談です。）
When you finally find space and nail your parallel parking skill, you are not done yet! You have to turn the tires. It's a unique rule for a city like San Francisco which has so many steep hills. Without this, you would get a ticket.
Lastly, of course you pull a parking break fully.
そして、運良く駐車スペースを見つけ、パラレルパーキングに成功しても終わりと思ってはいけません。タイヤを回しておかないといけないのです。そうしないと交通違反チケットをもらうそうです。急な坂のあるサンフランシスコならではのルールでしょうね。
そして、最後にサイドブレーキをしっかりと引きます。

On the last day, my flight back to Maui was not until 2 pm, so in the morning, after Alexa left for work, I drove around for one last chance.
マウイに戻る日、フライトが午後の2時だったので、朝アレクサが出勤してからの午前中、最後のチャンスだと思い近所をドライブしてみました。
I drove through the Presidio Park.
プレジディオ公園を横切りました。
There was the Walt Disney Family Museum in the park, but it wasn't opened yet, so I didn't go in.
ウォルト・デズニー・ファミリー・ミュージアムがあったのですけど、まだ開いていなかったので入りませんでした。

That day, I could not see the blue sky or the blue ocean because the city was covered in the fog.
I heard that it is often like that in San Francisco. I guess I was lucky to have such nice weather for the entire stay until I left there.
その日は青い空も青い海も見れませんでした。街全体が霧に囲まれていたのでね。
どうやらそれが普通らしいです。私が滞在した3.5日のうち3日とも快晴で、発つ日だけこのような天気だったことは、ラッキーだったようです。

I crossed it again. This time, I stopped by an island called Yerba Buena Island.
From there, I could see the tall buildings of San Francisco.
また渡りました。今回はオークランド側に着く前に途中にあるヤーバ・ブエナという島におりてみました。そこからサンフランシスコの高層ビルが見えました。
I visited Berkley for an hour and then headed to the airport.
バークリーに小一時間寄って、それから空港に向かいました。
$1.75 for one hour
一時間で約175円
Alexa bought me chestnuts at the Nijiya Market!
They are my favorite. I was soooooo happy.
I think what touched me the most was that her kindness - she remembered I love chestnuts and got them for me.
Alexa, I had a wonderful visit because of your hospitality.

私の喜びようと言ったら。栗自体も嬉しかったですけど、それを好きな私のことを思って買ってくれたという、その気持ちがとっても嬉しかったのです。

I got to see my important friends and was able to take Odissi classes from Vishunu and learned a great deal about parking.
