The Annual Haleakala Hike with Lita 毎年恒例のリータとのハイク

We did it again.
My dear friend, Lita and I do this Haleakala crater full moon hike every July. We usually start like 10 pm and walk all night long and finishes about 6 am. Why do we do this? No particular reason; or maybe there is or are, but a simple answer would be that we just like it.

She and I have known each other since we were 17. She is a year younger than me but is a matured yet very fun girl whom I love so much.

This year, we could not find anyone else to go with us, so it was just two of us. When we got to the top of Haleakala, it was cold and windy, so we jokingly said, "All right. We came up here, and now it's time to go home." Of course we did not come home and started to walk.

またやりましたよ。
友達のリータと私は、毎年７月の満月の夜ハレアカラの火口の中を一晩中歩くハイキングをします。22時くらいにスタートして翌朝6時くらいに終ります。何でするかというと、特に理由はありません。もしかしたらあるかもしれないけど、一番シンプルな答えは「ただ好きだから」です。

リータと私は17歳の時からの付き合い。彼女は私よりも10ヶ月下だけども、とてもしっかりした、それでいてお茶目で楽しい子で、大好きです。

今年は他に一緒に行ける人が見つからなかったので、二人だけでした。ハレアカラのてっぺんに着いたときはすごく寒くて風が強かったので、二人とも「さぁ、帰るか」って冗談で言ったけど、勿論帰りませんでしたよ。歩き始めました。

It was a couple of days after the full moon, but it was still bright enough; we didn't need a flash light. We attempted several times to take a photo of me with this sign, but I could not keep my eyes open when the flash went off, so this was "as good as it gets."

満月の２日くらい後だったのだけど、十分に明るくて懐中電灯は要りませんでした。このサインの前で何度も写真撮影を試みたものの、どうしても私はフラッシュがたかれる度に目を開けておくことが出来ず。

Lita did a good job.

リータはちゃんと開けてましたね。

Finding green plants is rare in the crater, but we found this "tree"! I wonder what kind of plant this is.

火口の中では緑の葉っぱを持った植物は滅多に見かけませんが、途中でこんな「木」を見つけました。何て言う植物なのかしら。

The moon accompanied us all night long. This year, we did not see anyone else.

お月様が一晩中私たちのお供をしてくれました。今年は誰にも会いませんでした。

We just kept walking...

This time, toward the end of the hike, my hip flexors started to ache, so it slowed me down quite a bit, but I kept my feet moving one step at a time. Because of this pain, I gave up seeing the sunrise at the top, and I told Lita to go ahead.

二人で黙々と歩き続け・・・。

今回はハイクの終盤で腰屈筋（大腿筋膜張筋）が痛くなり始め、そのため歩くスピードが大分落ちてしまいました。でもとにかく前に前に歩き続けました。この痛みのため、サンライズを山のてっぺんで見ることは諦め、リータに先に行くように言いました。

Right before a corner, I heard Lita shouting, "Akari, almost!" I tried my best to keep my pace up, and as I just turned the corner, I saw the top part of the sun peeking over the sea of clouds. I made it.

あるコーナーを回るところで「あかり、もうちょっとだよ！」というリータの声が聞こえ、頑張ってコーナーを回ると丁度お日様が頭のてっぺんを雲海の向こうから覗かせているところでした。ギリギリ間に合いました。

I liked this little guy who was saluting the sun.
A brand new day equally visits every being.

太陽に敬礼をしている、このちっちゃい奴がかわいかったです。
新しい１日は皆のもとに平等に訪れるのですね。

Lita collected these yummy berries for me who was exhausted. Thank you, Lita.

今住んでいる家で一番好きなところは何かと聞かれたら
（誰も聞かないけど）、この台所のタイルと答える。

An ant was carrying this white thing all by him or herself!

I like my new "business" shoes. I feel a little more grown up like
trying on my mom's shoes when I was small.
And these are Dansko - so comfortable even with heels.
新調した「ビジネス」シューズ、気に入っています。
少しお姉さんになったような気がします。
小さい時にお母さんの靴を履いてみたときみたいに。
そしてこのシューズはヒールがあるのにも関わらず、
とっても履き心地が良いのです。
ダンスコという会社の人間工学に基づいて作られた靴なので。

My friend Lisa and I folded these origami cranes in the quiet
evening of summer solstice surrounded by a nice scent
of incense was rejuvenating. Let your prayer soar into the sky.

折っていると、エネルギーが充電されるうに

Yay! I always wished to go in one of those children's tunnels.
Dreams do come true.

Of course I had to pull over.

ArT=MiXX in June ６月のArT=MiXX

At Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC), an innovative event called ArT=MiXX is happening (monthly?) You can read about it in more details at this article. It's quite fun. You can experience another dimension of visual arts.

マウイアーツ＆カルチュラルセンターで、ArT=MiXXという漸進的なイベントが定期的に開かれています。アートを体感するというテーマらしいです。楽しいイベントです。視覚芸術を違った次元から観察する感じ。

Grand Wailea Spa グランドワイレアのスパ

In June, my friend Fusayo suggested a great idea.

She said, "Akari, let's go to Grand Wailea's spa!"

We immediately planed it out and made it happen to heal our exhaustion.

There, you can use Kama`aina (local) discount if you show your Hawaii driver's license.

(The course we chose was 2 hours for $50. A quick body rub comes with it, and fruits and beverages are provided. Massage or any other services are provided with additional charge.)

６月に、友人の房代がすてきな提案をしてくれました。

「あかり、グランドワイレアのスパにあるお風呂に入りに行こうよ！」と。

私たちはすぐに意気投合し、疲れをほぐすべく向かいました！

ここはカマアイナ割引（ハワイの運転免許証を持っている、地元の人用の割引）が利くところで、私たちお手軽なお値段で（と言ってもちょっと奮発した感じだけど）入ることができます。（注意：私たちが選んだコースは2時間で$50。簡単な垢擦りが付いています。あと果物とレモネードが出されていました。マッサージとかは別料金です。）

Apparently, it was her first time to go out without her son. When I first saw her, she seemed a bit nervous. But once her energy changed to "All right, mommy is going to enjoy this!" I could see a different energy in her. She was a woman not a wife or a mother. She was she. Yup, you got take a break once awhile.

房代にとっては初めて息子無しで出かける機会だったようで、最初会ったときはちょっと緊張している感じが伺えました。でも「お母さん楽しむわよ！」というエネルギーに変わって、ある一人の女性に戻った彼女を少し垣間見ることができました。そうそう、お母さんもたまには息抜きしてちょうだい！

Living in a foreign country, we cannot help to miss the Japanese bathtub and the sento (the large public bath) and onsen (hot spring).

On the way home, we stopped by our Maui auntie Kyoko-san's, and then three of us went out for a dinner. It was a great afternoon spending time with my Japanese friends!

帰りにはマウイのお母さん的存在恭子さんのところに寄って、３人で夕飯を食べに行きました。日本人のお友達と過ごした楽しい午後でした。

Extra story: We also stopped by a second hand store, and I found this souvenir (dolls) from my hometown, Kochi in Japan. I didn't buy it, but I said, "Oh hello friends! What a long journey we each took to meet here!"

おまけ：ある古着屋さんに行ったのですが、そのときにこの高知のはりまや橋の人形を見かけました。買わなかったけど。同郷の友達に「お！遥々こんなところで会うとはね」と声をかけておきました。

Hana Visit with a Family Friend 友達の家族とハナへ

I got to visit Hana again in June when my long-time friend, Barbara and her family (husband and 3 boys) visited here. I hadn't seen her for awhile, so it was a great treat for me to spend time with her and her family.

６月に４月に両親と行ったときに引き続き、またハナに行く機会を持てました。長年の友人、バーバラが旦那さんと３人の息子とマウイに訪れたときに。バーバラには何年か会えていなかったので、久しぶりに会えてとても嬉しかったです。

When I first met her, her first boy was about 3 years old and her second boy was still a year old or so, now they are big boys! It was also great to see the third boy. The last time I saw him, he was still a tiny baby.

最初に会ったときには、まだ一番上のお兄ちゃんが３歳くらいで、２番目の子は1歳くらいだったのかな？今では大きなお兄ちゃんになってるけど！今回３番目の子に会えたのも嬉しかった。この前会ったときはまだまだ小さな赤ちゃんだったから。

On the way to Hana, we saw this waterfall gushing out.

道すがら、すごい勢いで流れていた滝も見ました。

Whenever I see growth of my friends' children, I wonder if I have grown that much also since the last time I saw them. I must have although it may not be as obvious as theirs.

友人の子どもたちに会う度に、彼らの成長振りに驚き、同時に私も彼らほどの成長を成し遂げたのだろか？と思う。きっとしているんだけど、彼らほど顕著ではないんだろうな。

It is nice to be friends' children's auntie or big sister.
I hope that they know I am here for them always.

友人の子ども達の「おばちゃん」や「お姉ちゃん」（私たちの歳の差によって呼び名が変わる）になるのはいいものだ。
私はいつでもあなたたちのためにここにいますよ。
