On February 23rd, I attended a workshop taught by Nrityagram dancers form India and Kandyan dancers from Sri Lanka. It was made possible by Maui Arts & Cultural Center. What a great opportunity they have provided for Odissi lovers of Maui.
Nrityagram is a unique dance company in a sense that the dancers live together in a village. They are immersed in a dance world 24/7. Protima Gauri founded this dance company and village.
Whatever the art form may be, it is always an honor to learn from and listen to stories of artists who have taken their paths very seriously. For me, I especially love to be with dancers since my most interested form of art is dancing. Their each move indicated years of dedication they have put into, and it aspired me to steadily continue to do what I love.
A couple of days prior to the workshop, they performed Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and I went to see (of course). It was my first time to buy the most expensive seat at their Castle Theater after having lived on Maui for 11 years. To me, it is like the Super Bowl. I wanted to see them close, but I thought that first several rows might be too close, so I purposefully chose an 8th row seat. (At this theater, the slight slope begins at the 8th row). The 8th row seat was fine, but during the first half of the show, I realized that I actually want to be even closer to the stage. During the intermission, I ran back to the box office and asked if there was any seat closer to the stage in the same price range still available, and if so, if I could possibly move there. The person who helped me said, "Sure" and I got the first center seat! Lucky me. During the second half of the show, I watched the show as if I was hanging on the edge of the stage. I could see each finger move, every eye move, and subtle facial expressions. I was satisfied. This time, we could see Samhara - a collaboration piece between Odissi dance and Kandyan dance. (Below, you can see a clip of their work.)
When I go to India, I would be able to watch many Odissi performances whereas here on Maui, we get any live Odissi performance once every 6 years or so. Oh, I cannot wait!
