Love Package 愛のこもった小包

Yesterday, I received a cute package from my friend in Japan.

Her name is Kayo. A beautiful name.

She and I met on the very first day of our high school life. 

We were in the same homeroom, and she was sitting right behind me. She tapped (kind of poked :) ) my back and said hello to me. I still vividly remember her round, curious eyes that were eager to soak up all the beauty in the world. (We were assigned seats according to our last names (alphabetical order)). 

The fate of a student roster is interesting... I still closely keep in touch with a friend who sat right in front of me (her name is Eriko) and right behind me. Kayo is now a high school teacher in our hometown, Kochi, and Eriko is working as a social worker also in Kochi.

We didn't get to see each other much after we graduated from high school. I came to Maui right away, and Kayo went to an university in Kansai area, but whenever I went back to Japan, I tried to get hold of her to catch up. 

She is a very unique person, and I love that about her.

She always thinks out of box. I think of her right away when I think of a free spirited person. But she is responsible. She has a strong will, and once she sets her mind, all the obstacles seem to back off and make a way for her. She has that kind of power. She is quite petite (even shorter than me) but can run a long distance really fast. I love her fashion sense... She is sophisticated but knows how to be down to earth. There are so many great things about her.

Her package warmed my heart.

I look forward to seeing her again sometime soon. 

昨日、日本の友人から小包が届いた。
彼女の名前は加誉（かよ）。すてきな名前。
加誉とは高校生活第一日目に出会った。
同じ教室で、私のすぐ後ろに座っていたのだ。（苗字をもとにあいうえお順に座るじゃないですか？それですぐ後ろだった。）トントンと背中を叩かれて（突かれてって感じだったかな？笑）振り向いたときに見た、まん丸とした、この世の全ての美をこの目で触れたいと言わんばかりの好奇心溢れる瞳を今でも覚えている。

今でも真ん前に座っていた子（えっこという）と加誉とは連絡を取り合っていて、出席簿の運命って面白い。加誉は高校の教師とし、えっこはソーシャルワーカーとして二人とも高知で働いている。

高校を卒業してからはなかなか会えなかった。私はすぐにマウイに来たし、加誉は関西の大学に行ったので。でも日本に帰る度に加誉に連絡をし、会うようにしてきた。

彼女はかなりユニークだ。そこが大好きなところ。
彼女は当たり前の考え方をしない。いつも一歩「箱」から出たところで考えている。「自由人」と聞いてすぐに思い浮かぶのも彼女。でもしっかりしている。一度彼女が意思を固めると、「障害物」たちは、トトロの猫バスが森の中を走るときみたいにみんな退いて彼女のために道を作ってしまう。そんな力が彼女にはあるような気がする。加誉はペティート（小さい）割りには長距離走が速い。私は彼女のファッションセンスが好きだ。洗練しているけれど、ちゃんと地に足を張って生きている。沢山の素晴らしいところがあるそんな加誉ちゃん。

彼女からの小包は心を温めてくれた。
またいつか会える日が楽しみだ。

追加：手書きのメッセージに「切り干し大根：スーパーで、安佳里に買わんと、と思ってしまった。大根のもどし汁が体にいいよ。」と書いてあったのだけど、そこに私はぷっと吹き出した。ありがとう。
