Moving 引っ越し

In June, I moved.

The new place is only 2 and half minutes away from the old place, and I paid the May rent at both the old and new places, so I had the whole month of May to move out and in at my own pace. 

I loved the previous place. I was content and comfortable. Also, I was literally under my dance teacher's feet (she and her family lived upstairs, and I lived downstairs), and the dance studio was only 3 steps away from my house door. So I was not looking for a new place at all, but right before I left for India (3 days prior to leaving), this great offer flew into my ears. The biggest decision factor was that the rent was going to be half of what I was paying. 

The new place was actually available from the beginning of April, but I was going to be gone the whole month of April (to India). Hence I would not be ready to move in May, but the new landlord was kind enough to say that I could get the place without paying the April rent. They said that they would keep the place for me. This is how I ended up paying rent at two places in the month of May.

I went back and forth with my car packed with my belongings, and once I used my friend Mika's truck to move bigger stuff. 

Beside the rent factor, the feeling of the new place was another attractive point. It was built during the plantation era, so it has quite a bit of history, and it was my favorite old, simple, country style. Actually the friend who told me about this house becoming available also lives on the same property (but in a different house), and when I visited her house in the past, I was simply mesmerized by its cuteness. I never thought at that time that I would be able to live in one also. We never know when our wishes come true. 

But I did not say 'yes' right away. I contemplated seriously. I considered its oldness (but the landlord has been doing an amazing job to maintain it well), and to say good bye to my dance teacher and her children was heart aching. In the end, I decided to take this opportunity and told my previous landlord right before I left for India. I always like to give my landlord at least 2 months notice, so I was glad that I could do that. (English part continues below.)

バイバイ、私の前のお家。3年半お世話になりました。

6月に引っ越しをしました。

前に住んでいたところから2分半だけ離れたところですし、5月分も新しいところと古いところ両方家賃を払っていたので、自分のペースで引っ越しを進めることが出来ました。

以前住んでいたところはとても気に入っていて、住み心地も良く、何と言っても踊りの先生の足下に暮らし（私が一階、先生と先生家族が二階）、稽古をするためのダンススタジオも玄関から歩いて3歩という素晴らしい条件だったので、新しい家を探していたわけではないのですが、たまたまインドに行く直前（3日前）、この新しい家の話しが舞い込んできて、なんと家賃が半分になることに「それはそれは、喜ばしきお話！」と思い、決断に至ったというわけです。

本当はその新しい家は4月の頭から空いていたのですが、4月いっぱいはインドに行くことになっていましたので、5月の頭から住み始めることは無理でしたので、6月の頭からしか住み始められないけれど、場所を抑えるためにも5月から払い始めたというわけです。本当はひと月でも家賃が入ってこないとなると、大家さん側としては困りますから、4月分も払ってもらうように言われるのが普通ですが、とても親切な大家さんで、4月分は良いとの事で免除してもらいました。

自分の車で何度か往復し、また大きいものは友人のトラックを一度借りて済ませました。（美香さんありがとうございました。）

また家賃だけではなく、今度のお家はプランテーション時代に建てられた歴史ある建物で、そのシンプルなカウントリースタイルが私の好みだったことも、決断の理由の一つでした。実はこのお話を持ってきれくれた友人も同じ敷地内にある家を借りて住んでおり、彼女の家に訪れた際に「あぁ、何てステキなおうちかしら」って溜め息をもらしていたのですね。まさか自分も住めるようになるとは。夢はどこで叶うか分からないものですね。真っ先にこの話を持ってきてくれたその友人に感謝！

でも二つ返事で引き受けたわけではありません。家も二度じっくり見に行きましたし、古い分ガタが来ていないか考慮しましたし、踊りの先生の元を離れることにとても躊躇しました。（先生の子ども達にどう話すか悩みました。）3日間悩みに悩み通し、決断をし、インドに行く直前に報告したわけです。私は引っ越す場合は、大家さんに最低でも二ヶ月前もって報告したい方なので、それが叶ったことには胸を撫で下ろしました。

The new place was originally built not as a residential house (I am assuming that it was like a storage building), so it is quite small and does not have any closet space, but I very much liked its smallness. I did not posses much before the move, but I thought that it would give me a good chance to really cut it down to minimum. "Do I really need this?" was the question I kept asking myself and 'bravely' I got rid of lots of lots of stuff. I did not simply throw them away. If things were in a good condition, I sold them at a garage sale, brought to the Good Will, or gave to my friends. Only the furniture I brought to the new place were a chair, two wooden stools I like, and a bookshelf, and two filing cabinets. 

新しく住むところは、建てられた当初は人が住むための家としては建てられておらず、物置きのような役目を担っていたようで、なので家としてはとても小さいです。でも私はそのコンパクトさが気に入ったのです。もともとそんなに物持ちではありませんでしたが、これを機に出来るだけ身軽になる良いチャンスだと思ったのです。これでもかというように、「必要最小限」をモットーに潔く処分していきました。持参した家具は椅子と、肘掛けの無い椅子二つと、本棚とファイルキャビネットだけ。

Although I had a lot less stuff than before, not having a closet and much space forced me to be creative. The solution I came up was a bunk bed. I would sleep on top and use the bottom space as a closet. When I called local furniture stores, they were out of stock, and I would have to wait 6 weeks to get it shipped from the mainland. That would not have worked. I turned to the Craigslist.  As soon as I typed in "bunk bed," I found a good looking one for $150 which even included an almost-new twin-size mattress, and I immediately heard back from the seller. Conveniently  she lived near the school where I taught. On the way home from work, I stopped by and checked it out, and it looked like a solid piece, so I bought it and happily went home with it.

Later my friend Naoko came to help me assemble it together. (English texts continue below.)

処分と言っても捨てるわけではなく、まだまだ使えるものはガラージセールで売ったり、中古屋さんや古着屋さんに持っていったり、友だちにあげたりしました。そしてその「物置き」として建てられた家にはクローゼットがありません。いくら物が少なくなったとは言え、押し入れのような収納場所がなくては衣類を入れるたんすのようなものが必要です。でもベッドとタンスを置く場所はありません。そこで私が目を付けたのが、二段ベッド！これなら寝る場所と収納場所を、空からみたら重なった状態に出来て、スペースも有効活用出来ると思ったのです。（私が上に寝て、下をクローゼットとして。）

マウイにある家具屋さんに問い合わせてみたところ、350ドル（約３万５千円）ほどで売ってはいるものの、在庫切れで入荷するのに６週間ほどかかるとのこと。それでは困る。そこでクレイグズリストという、オンライン上で人々が物やサービスを売り買いするサイトを覗いてみたら、何とその場で150ドルの中古だけど良い状態の二段ベッドが見つかったのです。しかも新品に近いマットレス付きで！売り手に早速連絡を取ってみると、すぐに返事が来ていつでも取りに来てもらっていいとのこと。何と教えている学校のすぐ近くで、仕事帰りにもらいに行ってきました。様子を見てみたらなかなか丈夫に出来たものらしく、私は満悦な気分で持って帰ってきました。

後で友だちの直ちゃんが来て、二段ベッドを組み立てるのを手伝ってくれました。

But there was one problem. One piece was missing. I contacted the seller, and she was not aware of it. Her children were using it up to very recent, and she looked everywhere in the house. (Her family was moving to the mainland, so her house was almost empty at that time), and unfortunately she could not find it anywhere, so she gave me $75 back for it. Then there came a super hero, Kevin, Naoko's husband. He found a similar material at his house and made the piece for me. 

でも一つ問題がありました。ある板が無い事に気づいたのです。売り手さんにすぐ連絡を取ったら、彼女もビックリ。最近まで子どもが使っていたらしく、一体どこへ行ったのかしらとのこと。彼女の家族はアメリカ本土に引っ越すため、その時点で家はほとんど空っぽ。くまなく探してくれたそうですが、どこにも無いとのこと。なので彼女は半分の75ドルを返してくれました。そこで登場したのがスーパーヒーロ、ケヴィン兄さん。なおちゃんの旦那さん。家にたまたまあったらしい似たような素材の板を使って、作ってくれたのです！あぁ、本当にありがとうございました。

He even made this narrow wood piece for me. I told him that it was not necessary because I would not fall out on the wall side, but he did it for me anyway. Because of this, the bed is really solid. 

もう一つの細い板も余分に作ってくれました。 壁側な無くても落ちないからいいですって私は言ってたんだけど、わざわざ。 まぁその方がベッドの頑丈さも上がったと思います。

Then Kevin put this U shaped rod holder on each side.

So I can hang clothes like this. 

A great thing about this closet is that I can put stuff behind the clothes.

I don't have that many clothes, so I can put things like suitcase, my Yosakoi costumes, heater, blankets, and so on.

なのでこのように服がかけられるようになった。

このクローゼットのすごいところは、ハンガーにかかった服の後ろにさらに色々物が置けるスペースがあること。私はそんなに衣類は無いので、スーツケースとか、ヒーターとか、冬に使うブランケットとか、よさこいの衣装とかしまっています。

When I was a child, I used to sleep on a bunk bed with my brother. I did no think that I would sleep on it as an adult, but it's really fun! 

小さい頃、二段ベッドで弟と寝てたけど、大人になってもまた寝れるとは。

何だかとても楽しいのである。

There is a little space between the bed and the wall, and
I discovered that you can put books there. I love it!

I found these index cards from my psychology class during college.
I threw them away, but before I did, I took a photo as my memory.

整理していたときにで出てきた、学生時代に取っていた
心理学のクラスの単語シート。
捨てたのだけど、捨てる前に思い出に写真に撮っておいた。

I guess I didn't know some words that I know now.
当時は「amplified」とか「scalp」の意味を知らなかったらしい。

There was this cute strawberry growing by the porch of my new place. I did not feel right to harvest it and eat it when I am a newcomer. I left it and let the bugs eat. 

このかわいい苺が新しい家の玄関の傍にあったのだけど、 新参者の私が摂って食べちゃうのは気が引けたので、 古参者の虫さんたちに食べてもらいました。

I found this tea bag message left on a kitchen shelf left by the previous tenant. (She cleaned the place thoroughly, so I am assuming that this was left on purpose.) What a perfect message. I am keeping it where it was left.

あるメーカーのティーバッグには、色々なメッセージが付いてくるので、それらをお茶をすすりながら読んだりするのが楽しいのだけど、 以前に住んでいた人がわざと台所の棚に残していってくれたものがありました。（その方はばっちり掃除をして出ていかれていたので、これは故意に置いていったのだろうなと思った。） 何てすてきなメッセージ。 （英語のlightには軽いという意味と光という意味があるから、それらをかけたもの。 ）

「身軽に旅をし、 身軽に生き、 光を放ち、 その光になりなさい。」

そのままにしておきました。

All the curtains were cut and sewn by Naoko.

I knew that I would want a curtain to hide the closet, so I already had purchased this fabric. It was actually a shower curtain. I was going to cut it and hand sew it myself.

Naoko has a sewing machine, and she kindly like an angel offered me to make 3 curtains for me.

One was for the closet. The second one was for under the sink, and the third one was for a kitchen cabinet (see a photo somewhere below).

これらのカーテンは全て直ちゃんが切って、縫ってくれたものなんです！

二段ベッドの下にカーテン欲しいなと思っていたので、前もって買ってはいたのですが（もともとはシャワーカーテンです）、手縫いでチクチクする予定だった私に、ミシンを持っている直ちゃんが「縫ってあげようか？」と天使のように声をかけてくれたのです。全部で3つのカーテンを縫ってくれました。一つはベッドのクローゼット用でしょ。それから2枚目はキッチンシンクの下用。3枚目はキッチンキャビネット用（その写真は下に出てきます。）

I was hoping to get a kitchen island cart or something like that for this space.

このスペースに何かキッチン関係の物をしまえる棚でも欲しいなと思っていました。

Then I found one! This was even free!

Again, Kevin kindly helped me by putting the inside shelf.

そして見つけてきました。しかもタダで！

またまたケヴィン兄さんにお世話になりました。中の板を取り付けてくれたのです。

本当にお世話になりました。

This is the 3rd curtain!

I was truly amazed how every inch of a shower curtain was used for these 3 curtains, and they were perfect sizes!!!

これが3枚目のカーテン。

一つのシャワーカーテンが無駄なく使われ、3つのカーテンが出来たわけですが、サイズがぴったりですごく感動しました。

The inside is like this. I put cooking oil, supplements, tea bags, and so on.

The white hanging basket in this photo is really useful.

中はこんな感じ。油とかサプリメントとか、ボールとか、お茶の葉とか入れています。

あの、写真に見えているぶら下げるタイプの収納かご、便利です。

On top, I can put a rice cooker, a toaster, a blender, and so on.

上には炊飯器、トースター、ブレンダーなど置けますしね。

I knew that it would get dirty from cooking, so I bought these gas liners.

料理をしているうちにどんどん汚れていくだろうと思い、このシートを買いました。

It looks like this. It makes it easier to clean.

こんな感じ。掃除がし易いです。

I have brought a couple of tension rods from Japan (Japan's one dollar store).

It came handy when I found this little space.

I can hang towels!

日本の100円ショップで突っ張り棒をいくつか買って持って帰ってきていたのですが、それが役に立ちました。このスペースを見つけたので付けてみたら、タオルをかけられるように。

This pan hangers was already there. Yay.

お鍋やフライパンをぶら下げられるところが、もともと付いていました。イエイ。

Naoko helped me so much already, but she even gave me this house warming gift, cutely wrapped.

直ちゃんには、既にすっごくお世話になったのに、その上このようにかわいく包装された新居祝いを頂きました。

Inside, I found a handmade (by Naoko) sign written, "Aloha" with tiny shells!

What a great gift!!

何と、中には直ちゃん手作りの「Aloha」と貝殻で書かれたサインが！

どれだけ嬉しかったことか！

Here is another creation of Naoko - a key hanger.

I can put the house key right there as soon as I walk in, so I won't lose it.

そしてここにもう一つ、直ちゃん作のものが。鍵掛け。

家に入ってすぐに鍵をかければ、無くしちゃう心配無し。

At the new house, there is a beautiful, wooden table made by the landlord. I love this table. 

This becomes a work desk and dining table. I put everything away at each occasion.

この家には大家さんが作られたらしい、大きな立派な木のテーブルが置いてあって、私はとても気に入っています。そこが私の仕事机にもなるし、食卓にもなるのです。その度に片付けています。

There were two chairs already in this house. I love their nostalgic outlook, but their legs were scratching the wooden floor, so I sliced a wine cork (I can't drink wine, but I collected them) and glued them on. The diameters happened to be the same. It's working!

Anyway, this is how I've moved into a new place, and I am enjoying it very much.

また、この家にはレトロな椅子が二脚既にあったのですが、それらの足が木の床を傷つけてしまってはいけないと思い、ワインのコルク（私はワイン飲めないけど、コルクだけ集めてたの）をスライスして、強力な糊でくっつけました。丁度両者の直径が一緒でいい感じです。

そんなこんなで引っ越しが無事終わり、今は新しい家で暮らしています。とても住み心地がいいですよ。
