My Parents' Maui Visit - Day 5 両親のマウイ訪問５日目

On the 5th day (April 24th), I took my parents to whale watching. Whales come to Hawaii from Alaska in winter to give birth. When we went, it was the end of April, so the season was almost over, but we still could see a couple of them. We joined Pacific Whale Foundation's tour.

4月24日の５日目にはホエールウォッチングにお連れしました。温かい海で子どもを産むため、クジラさん達はアラスカからハワイに冬にやって来ます。私たちが行った４月下旬はもうほとんどのクジラさん達がアラスカに向けて帰って行っているところで、そんなに沢山は見られませんでしたが、それでも何頭か残っていました。パシフィックホエールファウンデーションというクジラを守る機関のツアーに参加しました。

日本人にとってはより一層の親しみがある
カメハメハ大王の名前が付いた小学校の前で。

We went to the Sugar Cane Train station to get a ride, but we did not quite make it before the last train departed, so we at least took a photo :)

サトウキビ列車に乗ってみようと、行ってみたら最終の便に間に合いませんでした。せっかくですから、記念撮影。

But we saw this gorgeous rainbow!
My dad said a joke which you have to understand Japanese to laugh. He said, "Oh, it's 4 o'clock, but we see a rainbow!" In Japanese, we say "niji" to say 2 o'clock, and the rainbow is also "niji." Do you get it?

でもこんな素敵な虹が見えましたけど。
ここで父の親父ギャグをご紹介。「あれ？4時なのに虹だね！」

Then we went to Lahaina Jodo Mission. I have lived on Maui for 11 years, and I had known of this temple but had never visited, so I wanted to go. There is a Buddha statue, too.

それからラハイナ浄土寺に行ってきました。マウイに11年住んでいてここのお寺のことは知っていたけど、一度も行ったことがなく、ずっと行ってみたかったのです。仏像もあります。

This large temple bell was made on the 100th year after Japanese immigrants who came to Hawaii. Those Japanese people must have had their struggles adjusting to a new life.

この鐘は日本人の移民してきた方々が、ハワイに移り住んでから百年経ったときに記念して鋳造されたものだそうです。「移民百年之鐘」って書いてあるでしょう。その方たちはどんな思いで来られたのでしょうね。新しいライフスタイルに慣れるのに大変なことが沢山あったことでしょう。

There is a three-storied pagoda, too.
三重塔もありますよ。

At the temple, I saw my friend whom I met during my college years, so I said hi and then found out that he was the son of the head priest of the temple. I didn't know. They treated us with juicy mango and hot Japanese tea. Very delicious. Thank you.

たまたま、大学時代に知り合った友人がいて、こんにちはと言ったらそこの住職の息子さんでした。知らなかった〜。そこでマンゴーとお茶をご馳走になりました。おいしかったです。ありがとうございました。

Then we drove further to a place called Kapalua and visited one of the resort hotels, Ritz Carlton. We took a short walk and imagined we stayed there.

それからラハイナの先のカパルアにある、リッツカールトンというリゾートホテルに行って、「ほぉ。こういう風になっているのかぁ」という感じで参考までに散歩してきました。

The Ueoka family loved this hammock. My dad jokingly said, "If we sleep here, we can still say that we stayed at Ritz Carton." Well, he is correct, though...

このハンモックが気に入った上岡家。「ここで寝たら、リーツカールトンに泊まってきたよって言えるよ。」と父。確かにそうだが。

Our last stop of the day was the Kaanapali Airport. Maui has 3 airports. Most people have been to only Kahului Airport. Other two are tiny ones. One is in Hana, and one is in Kaanapali. The photo above is the whole building of the airport.

この日の最後のスポットはカアナパリ空港。マウイには実は３つの空港があります。カフルイ空港が主な空港です。あとの２つはかわいいくらい小さいです。一つはハナに。もう一つがこのカアナパリ空港。上の写真で見えるのが空港の建物です。

I felt deep happiness to see my parents enjoying themselves.
両親に楽しい時間を過ごしてもらうことに深い幸せを感じた瞬間。
