My Parents' Maui Visit - Day 8 両親のマウイ訪問８日目

On the 8th day (April 27th), we visited Mt. Haleakala - my favorite place on Maui. 

We went early afternoon, so it was not that cold, yet we woke jackets and ski hats. It's funny how we have an occasion to dress like this in Hawaii.

８日目（4月27日）には、ハレアカラに行ってきました。私の大好きな場所です。

お昼過ぎに行ったので、そんなに寒くはありませんでした。それでもジャケットを着て、スキー帽を被って。ハワイなのにそんな風体になることがあるなんて、面白いですよね。

Here is a funny and cute episode. My parents are originally from Ehime, but they lived in Kochi for many, many years, so they're familiar with Kochi's tradition and culture, so they know the Naruko-bushi, a folk song originated in Kochi, by heart. Before Suga-sensei's grave, my parents put hands together and prayed, and then my mom started to sing the Naruko-bushi. My dad picked up the Naruko that were left by one of the Izanai Yosakoi dancers who visited there in March and started to clang it even with some his original moves. When they finished, they laughed so hard, and I laughed, too. I think Suga-sensei enjoyed that. (For those of you who do not know, Suga was from Kochi, and she made a significant contribution to the culture of Yosakoi.)

My dad said, "I think Suga-sensei is still as busy as when she was alive. She must be flying all over to do her work." My mom said, "Yeah, she must be, but she is here, too. She now can go anywhere she wants in a moment."

ここでちょっとおかしくてかわいいエピソードを一つ。私の両親は元々は愛媛県出身ですが、高知にも長く暮らしたので高知の伝統や文化をよく知っています。もちろんよさこい節はおてのもの。須賀先生のマウイのお墓の前で、二人それぞれに手を合わせお祈りをしました。そしてその後、母が元気な声で鳴子節を歌いだしたのです。それに合わせ、父もそこに置いてあった鳴子（３月に日本から来た踊り子が置いていったもの）を手に取り、母の歌声に合わせてカチャカチャと鳴らし、オリジナルな踊りまで（踊りというか、その場に立って膝を曲げたり伸ばしたりというものを）披露してくれました。終ってから二人とも大爆笑。私も大爆笑。須賀先生も、きっと喜んでくれたことでしょう。

父が「先生今もいそがしく、色々なところを飛び回ってお仕事してるんじゃない？」と言っていました。母も「そうやね。でもここにもきっといるよ。今はどこへでも瞬時に行けるからね。」って。

Then we left the place.
(My mom is not kicking my dad just so you know. She's stepping over a rock.)
そしてその場を後にしました。
（注：母は父を蹴っているわけではありません。石を跨いでいるところ。）
