Hana Relay ハナリレー

On September 8th, for the first time, I participated in the Hana Relay.

It is an annual race of "an incredible fifty-two mile journey along 617 curves and over 56 bridges through the most breathtaking scenery in all of Maui" (taken from the Hana Relay website).

There were 202 teams this year, and each team needs to have 6 people, or some teams had 12 people, and 2 people ran together. This means that there were at least 1,212 runners. 

My friend, Lita asked me if I would like to join this year (she had done it before). Just so you know, I am not a big runner, but I thought, "Why not? It would be a good memory," so I said yes.

This is a friendly race. You don't have to be a super trained runner to join it. I love the fact a race like this exists. You are encouraged to have costumes on (our team wore neon colors), and you can decorate your vehicle, too. Each team can have one vehicle to transport other runners while one runner is running.

９月８日に初めて、ハナリレーに参加してきました。

このリレーは毎年９月に行われるもので、ハナリレーのウェブサイト曰く「マウイの中でも１、２位を争う、息を呑むほど美しい景色を見ながらの（私個人的には見てる余裕なんてありませんでしたけど）、617個のカーブと56個の橋を含む、52マイル(83.69km)のレース。」

今年は202のチームが参加したようです。それぞれのチームに６人の走者がいます。中には12人いて、二人が一緒に走るチームもありましたけど、最低1,212人の人が走っていたことになります。

友達のリータが「あかりもやらないか？」と声をかけてくれました。（彼女は以前やったことがあったので。）私、ぜんぜんランナーじゃないんですけど、「いい思い出になるかな？」と思って、そういうノリで「オッケー」と参加する決断をしました。

このリレーはとてもフレンドリーなレースです。すごく走り込んだ人だけが参加できるというものではありません。誰でも参加可能。そんなレースがあるって、素敵だなと思いました。コスチュームを着て走るっていう時点でもう楽しいイベント。（私たちのチームはネオンカラーで統一しました。）ランナーを移動するためのレース用の車を飾るチームもいました。一チームに一台まで車が許可されます。その車で一人が走っている間、残りの５人が次の地点へ移動します。

このときはまだ笑う余裕がありましたけど、
後で「私は何ゆえにこのレースに参加する
ことにしたのかしら？」と考えていました（笑）。

The race itself is divided into 18 legs. If you divide 18 by 6, it is 3, so each runner runs 3 legs. I ran leg 4, 7, and 14. Here is a page that describes what each leg is like. Each runner runs approximately 9 miles in total.

レース自体が18のレッグという区間に別れています。18を6で割ったら3ですので、一人が3レッグ走ります。私が走ったのはレッグ4と7と14。それぞれの区間がどのような区間なのかを詳しく説明したページがここにあります。（全部英語ですけど。）一人平均で合計14キロほど走ります。

Although it was physically and mentally challenging, I was glad that I did it. It definitely became one of my great memories of Maui. Most people stayed in Hana overnight to enjoy its beauty and company of friends. I did not plan on staying, so I got a ride home with people who were also not staying. Lita helped me to find people who would give me a ride back. She found a very nice family for me. This meeting was another great gift from the Hana Relay.

身体的にも精神的にも辛かったけど、でもやって良かった！マウイでのすてきな思い出の一つになりました。ほとんどの人がハナの美しさと友達との時間を楽しむために、そのままハナに泊まったけど、私はもともと泊まる準備をしていなかったので、泊まらない人たちと一緒に帰ってきました。リータが泊まらずに帰る人探しを手伝ってくれました。そしてすてきな家族を見つけてくれました。この家族との出会いもハナリレーがくれたプレゼントの一つです。
