Preparing for the New School Year 新学期に向けて

In this blog entry, I will share a bit of what it was like to prepare a classroom for a new school year. 

今回のブログエントリーでは、新学期に向けて教室を準備していく様子を少しご紹介。

Mail Boxes - Each child has one; this is where I put letters from school and other various papers that need to go home. The children check their mail boxes before they go home and put the letters in their homework folders.

メールボックス：ここに学校からの手紙やプリント類を入れます。子ども達は帰る前に自分のボックスをチェックして、何かあったら宿題フォルダーに入れて持ち帰ります。

朝一番にすることのチェックリスト

A desk name plate - I write each student's name. Thank you to Mika for taping this on each desk! Writing names is my favorite of all. Each name must have been named with so much thoughts and love. I write each letter as I pray for the child's healthy growth although I hadn't met him or her yet. 

一つ一つの机に貼って、子ども達の名前を書き込んでいきます。美香さん、貼ってくれてありがとう！

この名前を書き込んでいく作業が一番好きな作業です。沢山の人の愛と想いがあって付けられた名前。まだ見ぬ子ども達の成長を願って、１文字１文字心を込めて書きます。

Name tags - My friend Debbie did this for me (with her big pregnant belly!) I printed out each child's name, and Debbie glued it on a piece of construction paper, cut it out again, and laminated.

名札作り。まず名前を一人一人プリントアウトして、それを画用紙に貼って、また切って、プラスチックでラミネート。友人のデビーが（出産間近の大きなお腹で）手伝ってくれました。

Then, Debbie made these pencil boxes for me. Each child gets the same items. The 2nd grade at our school collects supply fee ($30) from parents at the beginning of the school year. Then we, teachers, buy the supplies. We love this way because we can assure that everyone has enough and the same (so they won't argue :))

デビーが一人一人の文房具箱も用意してくれました。みんな同じものをもらいます。私が教えている学校の2年生の学年では、新学期が始まるまでに児童一人あたり$30の教材料を払ってもらいます。そしてそのお金で私たち教師が、文房具を買いに行きます。私たちはこの方法が一番気に入っています。学年によっては、また学校によっては、児童一人一人に教材を買ってきてもらいますが、そうすると買って来ない子どもがいたり、みんな違う物を持っているので「それ、僕が買った鉛筆！返して！」なんて喧嘩になることもあるので。

I personally like to arrange the desks in an U shape because I can freely move around inside and get to each child quickly. 

私はこのようにコの字型に行方を並べるのが好きです。中で自由に動き回れるので。児童一人一人にささっと近づけます。

子ども達のアートが貼られていく壁。

My classroom has 5 Mac computers. The students use about 30 minutes a day for IXL and AR.
私の教室には５つのコンピューター（Mac）があります。１日に30分ほど使います。

When someone is being kind, we write about it on the Post-it note and put it on this Kindness Board.
誰かが親切なことをしているのを見かけたときに、書いてここに貼ります。

I love reading "Toto-Chan: The Little Gril at the Window" to my students, and they love listening to it, too. They ask me, "Are you reading Toto-chan today?" When I was a 4th grader, my teacher read it to her class, and I used to love listening to it.

「窓ぎわのトットちゃん」を生徒達に読むのが好きです。子ども達も楽しみにしています。「今日、トットちゃん読む？」と聞いてきます。私が４年生のときに、担任の先生が読んでくれました。その時間がとても大好きでした。

後ろにあるファイルキャビネットは、この教室に来たときからあったもの。歴史を物語っております。

I could not write every process, but it usually takes 7 full days (from morning to night) to prepare.  I have done it several times, but it does not seem to get easier. Every year, I have something new such as "This year, I want to try this!" or "This didn't work quite well last year. How can I improve this?"

ここに書ききれなかったものも多々ありますが、毎年準備には一週間（７日間）丸々かかります。朝から晩まで。何度やっても簡単にならない・・・。毎年、「今年はこれをやってみよう」とか「昨年はここがスムーズに行かなかったから、改善したいな」とかって思う点があるので。

Well, no matter what, the first day of school comes.

Here I go!

さぁ、泣いても笑っても最初の日はやってきます。
