September 11th is a special day for me.
As we all know, it was the day of the catastrophe in N.Y.C. in 2001, and it was also the day I was going to fly to Maui from Japan to live on my own for the first time (age 18). Actually I ended up missing the flight due to a typhoon, so my boarding pass was reissued to fly out the next day - September 12th which was September 11th in the U.S., and I woke up to the well-known image of the twin towers falling on T.V. and realized that my travel plan also crumbled down for the time being. I was stuck for a week, but I was able to fly out a week later. It was a very empty aircraft.
A whole new chapter of my life in a foreign country where I did not speak its language began on the same day as the 9-11. It has been 11 years since then, and I am still on Maui and living a life that was totally unexpected and unimaginable at that time.
On September 11th of this year which was my 11th Maui anniversary, I went to a local grocery store to buy a couple of things, and the total amount came out to be $9.11. I thought it was quite interesting. I decided to keep this receipt as a reminder for many things such as: appreciation to my Maui family who has supported me for the past 11 years and my commitment to world peace. (I made a copy because the ink on the receipt eventually disappears.)

9月11日は私にとっては特別な日です。皆さんご存知のように、2001年の9月11日は、ニューヨークでのあの悲惨な出来事があった日でした。そして当時18歳だった私が、初めて親元を離れて暮らすために日本からマウイに来る日でもありました。結局のところ、台風の影響で国内線が遅れたため国際線に間に合わず、でも翌日の航空券を出してもらえたので、翌日の9月12日（アメリカは9月11日だった）に飛び立つ予定でした。その予定さえも崩れたことを、翌日の朝のテレビに映るツインタワーの崩れる様子を見て知ったのでした。１週間どこの空港も開かなかったので、にっちもさっちも行かない状況でしたが、1週間後にマウイへ向けて飛び立ちました。がらがらの機内でした。
全く新しい人生のチャプターが開いた日があの9-11と重なりました。それから11年が経ち、まだマウイに暮らしています。11年前には全くもって想像もつかなかった人生を送っています。マウイ生活11年目を記念する今年の9月11日に、ある地元のスーパーに買い物をしに行った際、合計がぴったりと$9.11でした。とても面白いなと思いました。この領収書をこれからも持っていようと思います。過去11年間支えてくださった、マウイの家族たちへの感謝の気持ちと、世界平和へ貢献していく願いを思い出させてくれるので。（領収書コピーを取っておきました。領収書の文字は時間が経つと消えていくので。）
As I was teaching my 2nd graders on September 11th, I realized that these children were not even born yet on that day (2001) because they were born in 2004, 2005, or 2006. It was kind of shocking to notice this fact and took me a while to really let it sink in.
9月11日に学校で2年生の子ども達を教えていて気づいたのが、この子達はあの日まだ生まれていなかったということ。私の今年の生徒はみんな2004年か、2005年か、2006年生まれ。その事実は結構びっくりで、ずしーんと来ました。
