Akari's Diary 2012 & 2013: Big Island is Big　ビッグアイランドはビッグだな

In mid July, I went to Big Island (the Island of Hawaii).
I attended a 10-day colon hydrotherapy cleanse program held at the Angel Farms.
It helped me to physically and emotionally get rid of things that I did not need to carry in me anymore.

It was not my first time to visit the Big Island, but the last time I went there, I had a very limited time, so I felt like this time was my real first visit to the Island of Hawaii...

7月にはビッグアイランド（ハワイ島）に行ってきました。
エンジェル・ファームというところで、10日間のコロンハイドロセラピー（腸内洗浄）のプログラムに参加するため。
もう持っている必要のないものを、身体的にだけでなく、精神的にも取り除くことができました。

ビッグアイランドに行ったのは今回が初めてではなかったのですが、前回はとても短い滞在だったので、本当にビッグアイランドを訪れるという意味では、今回が初めてのようなものでした。

I was lucky to have met friends who took me to a lava hike.

I was playing with my camera.

Later, my friend adjusted its setting to be able to take better shots.

カメラで遊んでいました。

この後、写真を勉強したことのある友人がカメラの設定を変えてくれたので、暗いなか良い写真が撮れました。

"Pele's Hair"

As I walked, I prayed for Pele (the goddess of Volcano in Hawaiian mythology).

これはまだ遊んでいるときのもの。

「ペレの髪」

歩きながら、ハワイの伝説に出てくる火山の女神ペレにお祈りを捧げました。

It took 2 hours in and 2 hours out.
We started around 9 pm, so by the time we came out, it was quite late night or I could say quite early morning.

片道2時間のハイキングでした。
夜９時頃に歩き始めたので、帰って来る頃には夜が更けていましたというか、とても早い朝でした。

It was beyond beautiful and powerful.
I could not find words to describe at that time.
I felt like I was seeing Pele's blood.
It was pumping out new earth.

Its heat burned away the layer I consciously or unconsciously put over something that I did not want to see; hence, the raw part was made to be exposed. First, I was uncomfortable. But there was nowhere to hide, so I decided to soak up the heat as blessing. I wanted to have some of Pele's energy - strong and dignified, almost solemn.

Then my wish came true. I felt Pele blew her breath over me, and my passion which was quietly smoldering deep down in my heart flared up. There you were.

美しいとかすごいという言葉を超えていました。
言葉が見つからず、そのときはただただ見ていました。
ペレの血がゆっくりと流れているのを見ているようでした。
新しい大地を作り出す血でした。

その熱さは、私が見て見ない振りをしていたものの皮を焼き、その生々しい部分が露（あらわ）にされました。最初はそよそよして居心地が良くありませんでした。でも、もう隠れるところはありません。そうなったからには、もうとにかく熱を浴びることにしました。祝福だと思って。
ペレのエネルギーを少しでも持ち帰りたくて。強く、尊く、謹厳な彼女のエネルギーを。

そんな願いがペレに伝わったのか、彼女の吐息がかかるのを感じました。そのとき、自分の奥深くで静かに燻ぶっていたものが、一瞬燃え上がったのを感じました。あぁ、そこにいたのね。

I had an opportunity to visit Mauna Kea, too.
マウナケアに行く機会にも恵まれました。

The weather was not that clear as you can see.
天候は見ての通り、あまり良くなかったけれど。

But I liked the view. I really like this kind of weather and view.
It helps me to descend into the deeper part of the quiet place.

私はこういう景色と天候がとても大好き。
心の深い部分に潜っていけるから。

Ta-da! Once we poked through the clouds, the blue sky said hi.

ほら！雲の抜けたら青空がこんにちは。

I could see Mauna Loa.
ハワイ島にあるもう一つの火山、マウナロアも見えました。

I could see Haleakala on the Island of Maui, too!
And a funny thing is that exactly a week prior to the day, I was on top of Haleakala with Lita and saw Mauna Kea. (Here is the blog entry about it.)

マウイのハレアカラも見えました！
面白いのが、この日から丁度一週間前にリータとハレアカラのてっぺんにいて、そこからマウナロアを見ていたのですよ。（このブログエントリーを参照に。）

It opened!
おぉ、開いた！

This is one of my friends who took me there.
I had to post this photo...
(He's been a resident of Hawaii for quite many years; he knew how cold it would be.)
I had to laugh for a second (or three seconds) - not at him but at this contrary view.
When we thought, "Where did L go?" and looked around, we spotted him here.
He evacuated himself to escape from strong, cold winds...

この方、連れて行ってくれたお友達の一人・・・。
（彼はハワイ島に長年住んでいて、マウナケアにも何度も来たことある人。どれだけ寒くなるか知ってたのに、この服装。）
わたくし１秒ほど、いや３秒ほど笑いました。
彼をじゃなくて、この図に。
「あれ、どこ行ったんだろう？」と思って見回してみたら、
風をよけるためにここに避難していた。

Probably this is the only place where I would see this sign in Hawaii!
「危険　冬には氷が落ちてくることがあるので気をつけて」
と書いてある。そんなサインを見るのは、ハワイではここだけかも。

The sacred place...
(I was told that ancient Hawaiian people used to walk up to this spot and had ceremonies.)
とても神聖な場所
（昔ハワイの人たちはこのてっぺんまで歩いて登り、儀式をしていたらしい。）

I also had an opportunity to drive to Kona side of the island via Waimea.
ヒロ側からワイメアを通ってコナ側に行く機会にも恵まれました。

The famous Waipio Valley

Breathtakingly beautiful
一瞬息を呑むほど美しかった

The scenery changed. It started to have green rolling hills.
(We just passed Waimea when I took this photo.)

景色が変わってきました。丸っこい緑の丘が見えるようになってきました。
（この写真はワイメアを過ぎた頃に撮ったもの。）

Then, there was the first white sand beach I saw on Big Island!
I have visited every island of Hawaii except Niihau.
Each island has its own unique character, and it's very fascinating.
For Big Island is the youngest island, I felt it was very active, and plants were growing so vibrantly.

ビッグアイランドで初めて見た、白い砂のビーチ！
ニイハウ島以外のハワイ州にある島全てに行ってみましたが、それぞれ独自のキャラクターがあって、とても面白いなと思いました。
ビッグアイランドは一番若い島なだけあって、とても活動的で植物たちががこれでもかと成長しているのを感じました。

I joined these people who were playing volleyball.

There were approximately 100 miles between Hilo and Kona.
It takes about 2.5 hours of drive and I drove like 60~70 miles per hour.
It's actually very similar to drive from Matsuyama (where my parents live now) to Kochi (my hometown) in terms of distance and time.
"Big Island is big!!" is what I thought as I drove both ways.

ビーチバレーボールをしている人たちに頼んで少しの間一緒にやらせてもらいました。

ヒロからコナまで約100マイル(160km) 。二時間半ほどかかりました。
時速80~90kmくらいで走って。
松山と高知間を走るのと、距離的にも時間的にも似ています。
ビッグアイランドはビッグだということを、行きも帰りも運転をしていて感じました。
