The Izanai Yosakoi classes on Maui are going great!

As many of you know, I have been dancing this dance form since I was a little gir and have studied it with the late Suga Kunitomo. After she passed away in June 2011, I felt the need, urge, and mission to continue carrying the torch Suga left by sharing the joy of this dance form and the tradition of the dance festival originated in my hometown, Kochi after the WW II to bring people together.

In fall 2011, I started to teach classes here on Maui, and I am teaching them again this year.  (These classes are not taught all year around, only from fall to spring.)

We are getting ready for the Honolulu Festival which will be held in Honolulu in March.

I am so grateful to be able to dance with these wonderful people!
Some of them had never danced before and did not think that they would be able to dance, so for them to be dancing and even performing on a stage are a big deal. Their courage and dedication deeply touch me every time I think about these dancer. I think that Suga is happy and is really proud of them, too.

マウイでのイザナイよさこいクラス、無事に進んでいます。

もうみなさまご存知かと思いますが、私は小さい頃からよさこい踊りを踊ってきました。そして高校３年間と、卒業後８年ほど、故・國友須賀よりよさこいの真髄を学ばさせてもらいました。2011年の6月に須賀先生が亡くなってから、マウイでも先生が残してくれていった踊る喜びと、そして戦後人々を、地域を元気づけるために始まった故郷高知のよさこい祭りを、マウイの人々と分かち合うことで次の世代に繋げていく必要性と、駆り立てる想いと、勝手ながらに使命を感じ、その年の秋からクラスを始めました。

また今年もその時期がやって参り、10月の頭から教えさせてもらっています。（このクラスは年中あるものではなく、秋から春にかけてだけです。なので彼女たちにとって、踊るということ、ましてや舞台に立つということは大きなことなのです。

3月に行われるホノルルフェスティバルに向けて、みんながんばって踊りを習っています。

これらの写真に写っている、沢山のすてきな仲間達と一緒に踊れることを、心から嬉しく思っています。中には以前一度も踊ったことが無かった人もいます。自分がまさか踊るなんて、まして人前で踊るなんて思いもしなかったと言う方もいらっしゃいます。やってみようと思った彼女達の勇気と、諦めずにがんばってきてくれている努力には本当に頭が下がります。須賀先生も彼女達の踊っている姿をどこかから見ていて、嬉しく誇らしく思ってくれているのではないでしょうか。
