Oahu Trip Dec 2012 オアフへ

I flew to Oahu last week to take care of my visa, and I got to see my dear friends who live there.

As usual, I saw Chika (one of my high school best friends), her hubby, and their boy, Haruki. The last time I saw them was this past August. Even in 4 months, he grew so much and was talking a lot!

I don't know what it is. There is this special feeling toward my childhood friends' children. It's so fun to watch them grow, and they are super lovable. I cannot help to wonder how the time flew. We are now moms or dads taking care of babies. We used to be the kids who were taken care by grown-ups. 

先週はビザのことでオアフ島まで行く用事がありました。せっかくなので、オアフに住んでいる友人達に会ってきました。

いつものように、高校からの親友の一人、知佳と知佳の旦那さんと息子のハルキに会いました。この前会ったのは、8月なのでそんなにすごく前のことではないのだけど、この4ヶ月でハルキはさらに成長し、たくさんお話してくれました。

何でしょうね、この昔から知っている友人の子どもたちに対して感じる気持ち。子ども達が成長する様を見るのは本当に楽しく、愛らしく。そして「どうやってこんなにもの時間が経ったのだろう？」って思う。お母さんやお父さんになって子育てをしている友人が沢山いるなか、「あれ？この前まで私たちが子どもで、お父さんやお母さんにお世話してもらってたのにな。いつの間に？」って思う。

This time, I stayed at Yumie's place. I met her on Maui when we both just got off the airplane. We have a very similar background and are the same age. She also pursued her career in teaching,  so we have lots to talk about. I was so happy to see her and catch up.

今回はゆみえのお家に一泊させてもらいました。ゆみえとはマウイで出会いました。二人ともマウイに来たばっかりだった頃に。ゆみえとは同い年だし、結構共通な背景があったり、お互い教師になったので話すことが沢山。久しぶりに会えてとても嬉しかったです。

Then I drove to Waimanalo (east of Honolulu) for an appointment. It's fun to visit Honolulu once in awhile, but I cannot live there. I felt suffocated being surrounded by tall buildings. I need to be able to see greens, so when I came out of Honolulu, I felt so relieved.

それからワイマナロという地域に用事があったので、行ってきました。ホノルルはたまに行くのは楽しいけど、私は住めないなと思いました。高い建物で緑が見えないと窒息しそうになる。だからホノルルを抜けたときは、とってもほっとしました。

イアオ渓谷にあるイアオニードルに似た山を見かけました。

Then I drove to the north shore to see a friend. The famous surf contest was being held at the Banzai Pipeline, so the traffic was quite heavy. In the midst of driving very slowly, I found this Japanese looking home. If you see it carefully, you would find two Samurai(?) fighting on the balcony. 

それからノースショアの方に友人に会うため行ってきました。丁度かの有名なバンザイパイプラインでのサーフコンテストがあったので、かなり渋滞していました。そんなのろのろと進むなか、こんな日本チックな家を見かけました。よく見ると、バルコニーに二人の侍（？）が戦っているのが見えると思います。
