Chinatsu and the First Train Ride 千夏と初めての電車

When you were in a second grade, did you imagine seeing one of your classmates in a foreign country in the future? I did not, but it happened :)

My childhood friend, Chinatsu, originally from Tokyo has been traveling all over India for the past 6 months to study various things. I knew that she was going to be still in India while I visit India, but I was not sure if we could connect. Chinatsu being so flexible and kind came all the way to Mumbai to see me.

We met up at the famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) since she was staying at a hotel near the station. 

She and I had not seen each other over 10 years, but when we found one another, we both felt like we just saw each other yesterday. It was a funny feeling, and I guess that's what the magic of a childhood friend.

小学2年生の頃、大きくなってから異国でクラスメイトと再会するなんて想像されました？私はしてませんでした。でもそんなことが起こりました。

小学2年生からの友人、千夏（東京出身）はこの半年インドの色々なところへ旅をして、色々なことを学んでいます。彼女がインド入りしていることは知っていましたし、私がインドへ滞在している間もまだ彼女がインドにいることは知っていましたが、果たしてインド内で会うことが出来るのかは分かりませんでした。でも親切で旅慣れた彼女は、わざわざムンバイまで会いに来てくれました。

かの有名なチャトラパティ・シヴァージー・ターミナル駅（以下CST)で会う約束をしました。その駅の近くのホテルに彼女が泊まっていたので。

千夏と私はもうかれこれ10年以上会っていませんでした。でもお互いを見つけた途端、昨日も会ったような感覚がしました。千夏もそう言っていました。それが幼なじみの魔法でしょうか。

In order to see her at the station, I took a train in India for the first time. On the way, one of the senior students of my dance teacher named Rupali accompanied me. She had an Odissi dance class to teach closer to the downtown (where the CST is). I went to the class with her, took her class, and then she took me all the way to CST. She could have just showed me how to get there, but she was so kind to make sure that I really get to the CST. When we crossed busy streets, she literally held my hand to cross, and she taught how to use the train system in details. I was very grateful.

その待ち合わせ場所のCST駅へ行くため、インドで初めて電車に乗りました。そこまで踊りの先生の弟子の一人であり、私にとっては先輩にあたるルパリさんが連れて行ってくれました。彼女はその駅があるダウンタウンの方で出張クラスがあり、そこへ私も付いて行き彼女のクラスを取って、それからCST駅へ向かいました。ルパリさんはその出張クラスのあった最寄駅から私がCST駅行きの電車に乗り込むところまでを見届ける予定でしたが、心配だったのでしょう。何とCST駅まで、千夏にちゃんと会えるまで一緒に来てくれました。とても交通量の多い道を渡る時なんて、手まで繋いでくれました（笑）。電車の乗り方も詳しく教えてくれました。もう心から感謝でした。

You can buy a book of coupons instead of a buying a ticket each time you get on a train.
You validate them before you get on a train.

乗る度に切符を買う代わりに、回数券を買うことも出来る。

Chinatsu has been seriously studying Indian cuisine. She has observed many kitchens in various parts of India, but she had not seen a Marati one. Mavshi Bhavana (the auntie and the hostess of where I am staying) is a good cook, so I wanted to introduce Chinatsu to her. The next morning, I had some spare time, so I suggested it that Chinatsu would visit where I am staying, so she came.

千夏はインド料理をとても真剣に勉強していて、色々なインドの台所を見てきたのだけど、マラティ（私が滞在している地域）の台所は見たことがないということだし、私の滞在させてもらっているところのブヴァナおばさんはお料理上手だから彼女を紹介したいし、翌朝は私も少し時間に余裕があったので、千夏に私の滞在しているところまで来てもらうことに。

We had an amazing reunion.

It was truly inspiring to see my childhood friend courageously and boldly pursuing her dream.

The day we reunited, it happend to be a new year's day in India. We said, "Well, this is our new beginning!" then we parted to our own path.

Chinatsu will be still traveling in India for the next 6 months.

I wish her all the best and safe journey.

千夏とのすてきな再会の時間を持てました。

幼なじみが、自分の夢に向かって果敢に真剣に進んでいるのを見て励まされました。

私たちが再会したのは、インドでは元旦にあたる日らしく、「お互いの新しい始まりだね！」なんて言いながら、名残惜しくもバイバイをしたのでした。

彼女はこれからまた6ヶ月、インドを旅します。

彼女の旅が素晴らしく、安全なものでありますように。
