I got an arrival and a departure stamp in my passport on the same day for the first time. I had a pleasant flight from Mumbai to Tokyo, and within 2 hours of the arrival, I got on a plane to South Korea. I was there for 5 days to perform Izanai Yosakoi.
初めてパスポートに同日に入国と出国のスタンプを頂きました。ムンバイから成田までのフライトは快適なものでした。到着してから2時間後には韓国行きの飛行機に乗り込みました。そして韓国の南に位置する釜山にて5日間イザナイよさこいを踊らせて頂きました。
Suga Ren (the name of our dance troupe) was invited by an organizer of this large festival called Gaya Cultural Festival. When I arrived at the Busan Airport, there was a staff member of the festival waiting to pick me up at the arrival gate. Because my name does not end with "ko" (which is typical for Japanese female names such as Yoshiko), he thought I was a boy. When I walked up to him holding a paper with my name, he laughed and said, "Oh, you were a girl."
今回須賀よさこい連は、釜山で毎年行われている「ガヤ カルチャー フェスティバル」というお祭りに招待して頂きました。釜山空港に着くと、お祭りスタッフの方が迎えにきてくれていました。私の名前が「子」で終らないので「あかり」は男の子だと思っていたそうで、到着ロビーで男の子ばかり探していたそうです。「Akari Ueoka」と書かれた紙を持っているその方のもとへ歩いていくと、「あれ？女の子だったんだね」と微笑んで言われました。
It was about 25 minutes drive from the airport to the festival venue.
空港からお祭り会場まで、約25分のドライブでした。
It looked a lot like Japan.
何だか日本ととても似ている町並み
My very first impression of Busan was very organized and clean.
I wonder if I especially felt that way coming from India.
There was not even a piece of trash on the road.
釜山の第一印象はとても整備されていて清潔ということでした。
それはインドから来たから特にそう感じたのかな？
ゴミ一つ落ちていませんでした。
Oh, the festival venue is near.
お祭り会場が近づいてきました。
When I arrived at the venue, the Suga Yosakoi Ren was rehearsing on the stage. I could tell right away because I could hear "Maholoba."
着くと、丁度須賀連が舞台上でリハーサルをしているところでした。まほろばの曲がかかっていたのですぐに分かりました。

The place where we stayed was about 45 minutes drive from the festival venue.
We stayed at a facility owned by a theater group which planned and ran the festival.

宿舎は会場から車で45分くらい走ったところにあり、お祭りを企画運営されているある劇団の方の施設に泊まらせて頂きました。その施設までの景色。
Delicious and healthy meals were served every morning, lunch, and dinner.
おいしくて健康な食事を毎朝、毎昼、毎晩出して頂きました。
The spiciness of Korean food was like Indian food, but there were more fermented food, so it got closer to Japanese food that I am used to.
韓国料理の辛さはインド並みのものもありましたけど、発酵食品が沢山あって、
インドから少し日本側に近づいた食生活でした。
We danced every single day for 5 days.
５日間、毎日踊らせて頂きました。
This was an Eisa group, Ryujin from Shizuoka city, Japan.
Eisa is a traditional performance of Okinawa to welcome ancestors' spirits.
Whenever I hear music of Okinawa, it touches the deeper place in my heart.
We got to spend some time with them this time. I appreciated this meeting.
静岡市を本拠地に活躍されているエイサーチームの琉神さんです。
沖縄の曲はどうしてああにも心に染みるのでしょう。
今回、琉神さんたちと交流する時間があり、この出会いに感謝。

I flew in to South Korea with the cold I caught at the very end of the India stay. Opposing my hope (well, it's obvious if I keep dancing without getting a proper rest), it got worse and worse. Coughs, yellow runny nose, and fever appeared. I felt so bad for Akiko and Natsu who shared the room with me. And I appreciated then so much for their kindness. On the 2nd or 3rd day (I cannot remember exactly), I was administered an IV drip. At a hospital very near to the festival venue, I obediently lay down on a bed and slept for a couple of hours.
インド滞在の最後の最後にひいた風邪と共に韓国入りしたわけですが、良くなるどころか期待に反して悪化していき（そりゃ大人しく寝ずに踊っていたら無理かな）、咳も鼻水（黄色いやつ）も熱も出し、同じ部屋で一緒に寝ていたなっちゃんとあっちゃんには本当に申し訳なかったです。そしてお世話になり、心からありがたく思っておりました。韓国２日目か３日目には（覚えていない）点滴を打ってもらうことに。お祭り会場の近くにある病院に行って、2時間ほど大人しくベッドに横たわり、深く眠りました。

One day I was able to dance Musuhi only once with everyone due to my condition. When I could not, I took these photos from a wing of the stage.
ある日は完全に風邪でダウンして、みんなと一緒にムスヒを踊れたのは一度のみ。これらの写真は踊れなかったときに、舞台裏から撮ったもの。

It's so nice to reconnect with the dance sisters and brothers with whom I used to dance a long time ago as well as to meet new friends.
昔一緒に踊っていた踊り子仲間たちと繋がれたことを、とても嬉しく思いました。そして新しいお友達に出会えたことも。

I can't exactly remember how old they are now. I think about 16...
When I first met them, they were about 3 years old. I remember being a mediator when they fought over a toy. I also did some babysitting. But look at them! They are so big now. I'm speechless!

初めて会ったときは3歳くらい。二人がおもちゃの取り合いで喧嘩しているところに仲裁で入ったり、ちょっと子守りをしたりしてたのよ。それがこんなに立派になって。

We were doing some stretch, and Natsu misunderstood Akiko's verbal instructions and ended up like this. We laughed so hard.
部屋でストレッチをしていて、あっちゃんの口語での説明をちょっと聞き間違えたなっちゃんは、こんな状態になってました。笑わせてもらいました。

I had a great treat to see a Kathakali dance from south India.
南インドからやってこられたカタカリという伝統舞踊の演技を見られるという嬉しいサプライズ付きでした。カタカリは日本で言う歌舞伎のようなメイクをし、目、顔の筋肉の動きから発せられる表情、そして手の動きで感情や情景を表現する踊りです。

Anyhow, this is how I participated in the festival in Busan. For me, being able to reconnect with the Izanai family was such a treat. I gained so much inspiration and energy. And if we could have contributed to be a bridge between South Korea and Japan, there is nothing more that makes us happy. Though we speak different languages, once our hearts dance, we all are the same. Through dance, providing joy to as many people as we can fulfills our mission and passion.
